Are both of the sliding doors painted with chalkboard paint?...or would that be too much black for the space? I have old glossy white doors that I am considering to paint.

I don't recall, but Benjamin Moore has a line where you can create chalkboard paint out of any of their colors. I have been using that lately.

The owners of the house already owned the magazine holder and I am not aware of where they got it. Looking at it, it would be an easy piece to replicate with a similar design and could be done by taking the picture to a local craftsman who works with wood.

If you're not particularly adept at coloring in the lines, express yourself with words. Applying chalkboard paint to a door is a great way to add interest, keep yourself organized and get kids involved in list-making. You can apply this chalkboard paint treatment to any door.
Danyelle Mathews added this to Chalk It Up
Barn doors are all the rage, and this one is extra charming with the addition of chalkboard paint. It's obviously part of a child's space but will easily transition as the child grows. I can imagine a fun game of hangman happening there in a few short years.
Lisa Frederick added this to 9 Dorm Room Classics Schooled in Grown-Up Style
Or you could take the opposite approach: Choose your favorite poster, then display it solo on a blank wall for a clean, graphic touch.
