I have a piece of driftwood ready to go. Should I apply a good wax to the wood before mounting?

The driftwood used for this mantel was left natural - no wax applied. It was carefully cleaned with blown air to remove any debris in the nooks and crevices.

This large unique piece of black walnut driftwood was salvaged from a river in Mississippi and was supplied by a friend of the homeowners. Here's a closeup of the mantel.

This one-of-a-kind black walnut driftwood mantel was attached to the wall using two stainless steel pins. The pins were epoxied into the wall which was reinforced with solid backing. The effect allows to the mantel to 'float' from the wall +/- ¾".

A custom cabinet (see attached image) was built to house all AV equipment. It would be located to the right of the fireplace and tv in this image but cannot be seen from this photo.

A petrified fireplace? Be still my heart!I just used stone around my hearth (I opted for green soapstone), but wish I had known this was an option. Wowsa! I can't even handle the driftwood mantel.

While the construction requires some skill, finding a piece of wood that would fit in this area was just as much of a challenge. "Finding the right size and shape of the wood was a little difficult," says Chris Komenda of Woodmeister Master Builders. "But for us, that's part of the fun of reusing something unique and reclaimed."Our other favorite part about this room in this National Green Building Standard Gold-certified home: The stunning fireplace surround made from pieces of petrified wood. Cozy mid-century furnishings provide an update in this seaside living room. Natural elements such as driftwood and stone soften the look of the electronics and allows the television to feel integrated.
