A few years ago my wife and I moved into an Eichler home in SF that had never been remodeled since it was built in the 1960s. Erik and Bay 9 Architects helped us bring the house up to date while respecting the mid-century modern architecture of the original home. We fully remodeled the kitchen and all the bathrooms. In addition, the living and bedrooms were refreshed so the whole home now has a contemporary and upscale look and feel. Erik was always accessible during the process and he worked well with my wife, who is a talented interior designer.

Eric helped us design our 800 square foot addition and we are close to being done. We have enjoyed working with him as he is always responsive and flexible and a creative problem solver. Whenever hiccups came up, he worked diligently and patiently with us our and contractor to address the issues. I came to trust Eric and rely on him as this is our first home Reno project and it’s a stressful process!

We would highly recommend working with Erik (especially if you live in the Lamorinda area as he is local to that region, though he and his brother take on projects all over the Bay Area). We are nearing the end of our extensive renovation on a tight timeline and are really pleased with the results! Erik provided excellent plans for knocking down a dividing wall to create an expansive and light-filled open kitchen with a skylight, and helped shepherd our project through permitting in a timely fashion. He is highly responsive and easy to work with, and we appreciated his willingness to consult with us on many aspects of the remodeling process, even on questions not directly related to architectural issues. He also connected us with a general contractor who has been doing great work for a fair price. Overall it's been an excellent experience!

My remodeling objective was to gain more space in a cramped kitchen/dining area and adjacent bedroom. The house being a 1,758 s.f. ranch style home built in the 60's, had room to expand a little into the backyard. Eric determined that moving the walls 5-1/2' back (resulting in a 250 s.f. addition), would provide a comfortable space without overcrowding the backyard. He also provided a rendering of the interior that was open, modern and light filled thru the use of skylights and multi-panel narrow frame sliding glass doors along much of the back wall. The doors provided an almost panoramic view of the garden in a refreshing indoor/outdoor feel. As for the kitchen, I looked long and hard to find a supplier of quality, reasonably priced modern European style cabinets and Eric was able to find an excellent showroom providing good service and installation. Overall the end result is great! Better than I've ever imagined!!

We are working with Erik at the moment for a whole home remodel. Very responsive and has budget in mind through the design process. Can't wait to see our project come to life!

Erik Chan at Bay 9 Architects helped us to redesign an existing space in our house. We could not be happier with the results. Always focused on our needs, Erik was able to come up with a very efficient design to move an existing laundry room, while adding an entirely new bathroom (and two storage closets to boot.) He also helped us with our master bathroom remodel plans. We found Erik to be extremely creative, which was matched by his diligence and responsiveness. He maintained good communication with us during the entire process and was always available when we wanted to discuss the various plan iterations. Everything was completed in a timely manner. We enjoy working with Chris and Eric as much as we enjoy the outcome. We added 1000+ sq ft and almost rebuilt the house to create an open living space. Their design is practical and exactly what we need. We went through a couple of design changes during the lengthy process, and Chris and Erik had always been very responsive.

Erik has much experience and a broad portfolio in the the Bay Area and internationally. He created us a unique and modern design marrying art, quality, and value. His costs are reasonable because he does much of the design, CAD, and 3D renderings himself and avoids the high overhead of many large architectural firms. You will be pleased with the product.

We were getting ready to place an offer on a home in Orinda but needed some advice from a skilled architect before moving forward. Erik was very easy to contact, responded promptly, and was an absolute pleasure to work with. He provided honest and sage advice which saved us from a prohibitively expensive endeavor. I am very pleased with the outcome of my almost 1000 sq foot addition to our Lafayette home on my tight budget. Our project was not an easy one, a 2 level addition, on a hillside, design review, within inches of the setback and finding an affordable contractor. I decided to give Erik a call after my neighbor recommended him to us, and I was very impressed by the major remodel that Erik designed for my neighbor's house. We ended up hiring Erik to do the plans for our first floor addition in Millbrae - about 400 square feet, including an expanded living room, a new bedroom, and a new bathroom. First and foremost, we absolutely love the Craftsman design that Erik developed. We are glad he talked us out of our original idea of simply adding a box to the front of the house. Instead, his design blends in with the rest of the house so well; you might not be able to tell that it was an addition. We also had Erik perform construction supervision throughout the project. It was helpful to have him visit once a week to make sure everything was in accordance with the plans. For example, at one point, he caught that the contractors had started a design for the columns that wasn't what the plans called for, so he asked them to change it. He also reviewed the window options my contractor sent to make sure that we were picking something consistent with the Craftsman design, which I would not have known how to do myself. He also provided helpful advice when I was making decisions such as choosing bathroom fixtures, tiles, stone veneer, and paint colors. After the addition was done, we ended up also retaining Erik to do some plans for landscaping in the front yard. We are thrilled with how our house looks now!

We engaged Lun Chan Asociates to renovate our duplex several years ago. The firm did an outstanding job. The design of our third floor was exceptional. The staff were friendly, courteous and professional. From start to finish, we did not have to worry about anything. Eric Chan designed my house remodel and 1500 sf addition including guest cottage, swimming pool and landscaping. The job turned out beautifully, with spaces that were modern yet warm and inviting. He was respectful of our budget constraints and I believe he designed the best house we could have built for the money. Eric handled all issues with the city of Oakland including navigating a tricky setback issue with the city planners and he also helped us with negotiations with our contractors. I can confidently recommend Lun Chan Associates without reservation. Although it was my first experience with home remodeling and construction, I had a very positive experience throughout the process of converting my 1950s rancher to a much larger light filled modern home. More important, I am very happy with the way my house had turned out and regularly receive glowing comments from friends who visit my house and even from neighbors driving by on the street. I worked closely with Erik Chan, who provided a variety of services including drawings in all phases, obtaining the city permits, contractor selection, construction review and assistance in the selection of interior and exterior finishes and furniture. Some of what I like about Erik is that he is very imaginative, personable and he works extremely well with contractors and vendors. He is very receptive to client preferences, but will let the client know if other options may be better relative to the overall scheme and design of the house. So, while he offered a lot of experience and expertise on my project, the design was a true collaborative effort.
