About Us

Since 1985, HOUCK Residential Designers has specialized in residential plans for new construction, remodeling, and additions. Our goal is to satisfy the requirements of homeowners and builders by providing functional, attractive designs that are efficient and cost effective. We understand how intimidating the process of building a new home or remodel can be and we can help you with that. William “Butch” Houck | President, Designer I have over 40 years experience in various fields of drafting and design. I attended Forsyth Technical Community College after graduating from Reynolds High School. Before opening my own business in 1985, I worked as a draftsman for the Bahnson Company, Anderson Benton & Holmes, Inc. (a city planning consultant firm) and Topsider Homes. My passion is working with my clients—helping them to bring their ideas and dreams to reality. I’m an avid fly fisherman, motorcycle enthusiast and mountain bike rider. I enjoy going to the ymca and was a high school football official for 17 years. Barry Wilson | Designer Winston-Salem has always been my home. I attended Forsyth Tech and received an Associates of Architecture degree in 1990. My priority is to help homeowners and builders achieve their design goals whether for a new home, addition or remodel. When not designing I love attending church with my wife, Pam, playing bass guitar with friends or working on a project around my own home. I would enjoy speaking with you about turning your napkin ideas into reality.

Mr. Houck (Butch) did an incredible job on our house plans! We met with him to discuss in detail what we were looking for and he nailed it. He took the ideas we put forth and put them to paper. The plans were spot on and came in under budget. Mr. Houck was very professional and personable, easy to work with, and made himself available during the design process to answer any questions we had. I would surely recommend him to anybody designing new construction as well as renovation projects. Houck Residential Designers is top notch in my opinion. Pictures to follow when building is complete. Update March 2018: The house is complete and we LOVE it! I have posted a few pictures here. Thank you, Mr. Houck!

Barry did an outstanding job creating our house plans for a lakefront property. We wanted a design which would take full advantage of the beautiful lake view. Barry was able to take our ideas and visions and turn them into an amazing design. Barry was the perfect draftsman for our project. To begin with, we had a very difficult and limiting lot for building. Barry took our list of "wants" and worked nearly all of them into our dream house. With all of the limiting factors he was able to give us the spectacular views we wanted while also giving us a highly functional and beautiful, open interior space. Also, my husband had drawn out an idea for an interesting staircase and Barry not only figured out how to make it a reality, he made it more amazing by adding big windows on two levels of one side of the staircase that open out onto a screened porch which allows for windows to be wide open with no screens needed and beautiful breezes that flow throughout the house. Barry was always very receptive to our changes and made us very comfortable in knowing that we could take our time until we got everything exactly like we wanted. The best part of working with Barry is that after we had our dream house on paper the construction price came in too high, yikes! Barry was able to give us great options to help us lower the price to build without losing any of the things that were important to us and without changing the overall feel of the house. We would highly recommend Barry Wilson and Houck Residential Designers.

When working with Barry from HOUCK designs we were able to create the plans for our addition with ease and professionalism. Barry was able to take our ideas from the pictures we had found along with our descriptions of the needs for each space and create plans to meet our exact needs. Barry Wilson took our rough design and worked with my wife and I to design our dream home. Anytime we had a request Barry did his best to make it work out in our plans. He was always available for questions and was a true pleasure to work with. Barry had a lot of great ideas to offer as well in the design of our home. He also utilized all available space by adding in closets and storage areas wherever possible. Barry receives our Highest Recommendation!

Barry Wilson at Houck Residential Designers designed the renovation of my 1877 family home in North Carolina. Barry and I worked closely together to achieve just the right look for this challenging comprehensive renovation. The old part of the house was to remain and a new addition was to be added to the side and back. I had tried two architects before Barry, neither of whom understood what I wanted or what was appropriate for the house. Barry came highly recommended by my bother, whose new house he had just designed. I was very lucky to have found him. Barry is terrific to work with. He has great ideas, he is easy going, he listened to me and to my concerns and/or suggestions and always addressed them immediately and to my satisfaction. Together we came up with a design that I love and on which I have received many compliments. I would definitely use Barry again and am happy to give Barry the highest rating.

Barry Wilson is an experienced & talented house plan designer. His house plans are detailed, accurate, yet concise. His ability to have homeowners be comfortable with him & trust him quickly upon their initial meeting is inspiring to others.
