About Us

Martina Bacarella, AIA is the founding principal of Martina Bacarella Architect. She founded the firm in Brooklyn, NY in 2001, and moved to northeast Pennsylvania in 2004. While she has developed her practice in Pennsylvania she continues her work in New York City. Martina has been in the architecture field since she graduated from the University of Virginia School of Architecture in 1990. She is licensed to practice architecture in New York and Pennsylvania and has experience in every aspect of the planning, design and execution of new construction and historic building restoration. Her experience in the preservation field began in 1991 when she worked for the New York City Landmarks Preservation Foundation and was a research assistant on the Landmarks of New York: Part II book project. In 1992, she began working for an architecture firm specializing in exterior detailing, structural design and historic preservation. Highlights there included working as field architect during the restoration of the Church of Saint Luke and Saint Matthew in Brooklyn, NY. She prepared measured drawings of existing conditions and reviewed field conditions and shop drawings for the restoration of slate and copper roofs, ornamental plaster and Tiffany stained glass windows. These early jobs were instrumental in forming her appreciation and love for classical details, proportion and order and informing her own approach to design and technical detailing. Other past experience includes working for small firms specializing in historic preservation and high-end residential design that focused on traditional and classical detailing. Martina has worked with developers, hotel owners, co-op and condominium boards, and private residential clients, always paying special attention to the details and the client's wishes whether the project was traditional or modern in design. Martina was born in Italy and immigrated to the United States when she was 6 years old. She grew up in Queens and Long Island, New York. She has lived in 3 of the 5 boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn), and now lives in Northeastern Pennsylvania with her husband and 2 cats in a home that they restored.
