As others have stated, it was NOT a good experience. It was more about how Bill (Sensitive Information Hidden) (Owner) could save money rather than making the Customer happy. It was a battle every step of the way. The sales team was great, sad to say the Owner and Supervisor not so much. I could go on and on but no need. Here's the point, find another Builder. No way could I recommend AH.

I have thought about what all I would include in this review for a long time.. I will start by saying building a home is NOT easy, its not for the ones who want quick results and a picture perfect process. Things will be messed up, delayed and you will have to adjust your expectations on many occasions with that said how American Heritage handled the situations that had me wanting to pull my hair out is the reason I would recommend them to anyone looking to build. We cannot say enough wonderful things about the team American heritage has, Emily is the first impression I had when I walked in and she is the sole reason we chose them amongst many other builders we met with. She is a triple threat shes knowledgable in both interior designs as well as architecture and was able to help make all the modifications I wanted happen (AND QUICK) but she's also an incredible sales women. Then you get to meet Maggie for selections and she has a great way to make these huge decisions feel manageable, she's not pushy but offers suggestions and helps you narrow down what upgrades are MUST haves vs wants. Then Brandi comes into play with permitting and man I wouldn't want her job, but she does it fabulously and answered all my questions along the way. She was even there when I had issues with an inspector.. she was on it and I just appreciated her willingness to help. After all that you start meeting with your specific contractor, when we first signed and did our pre-construction meeting we had a different contractor then we got going (a little later than originally quoted when we signed but thats the business of building now so oh well) they poured the foundation and then switched our contractor, i was a little apprehensive because I was not anticipating that switch and for 5 months I had been talking and planning all the fine details with someone else.. but we ended up hitting the jackpot with Nick. He was SO responsive to my incessant questioning and neediness. He did his best to fill the gaps when we got delayed by trades over and over again. We did a lot of finish work ourselves like tile and flooring throughout and hired some of our own contractors too.. so it was a lot of coordinating and I often needed to call to ask when things should be completed etc. He was ALWAYS willing to talk and often talked me off the ledge.. like when my trusses were delayed 2 months or when the fireplace installer ghosted us for 3 straight weeks. Once again cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire team at American heritage, including Bill and Gary who both personally visited my home site to make sure things would fit how we wanted them to. Bill also did the MOST thorough final walk that I have ever heard of a company doing. We've got a pretty good knowledge base as my parents renovate homes and have flipped a few ourselves but we had MULTIPLE people walk through to "check the work" and they all agreed, it was quality work by AH. been in 2 months and we are so happy!

If I could give zero out of five stars I would. My family has been in our home almost 4 years and we are still fighting with AH. We had issues from the beginning, were advised by our realtor to walk away but would lose a hefty deposit. I wish I knew then what I do now. We have numerous cracks in our foundation that are allowing water to get into our basement. AH solution was to fill them, on several occasions. They are now bigger and have multiplied. Our gravity drain has standing water, water stains on the floors and walls of the basement and it is always damp. The first and second floors have cracks in every corner and all of our drywall wraps are cracked, even after multiple repairs. Cracks in the ceiling. All normal "settling" as Bill the owner calls it, all these years later. He suggested that we finish our basement and use spray foam insulation to keep water from getting in., rather than him repairing. For a period of atleast 2 years we had water pouring in our diningroom windows to which we were told "its because you live on a windy hill with driving rains". Our floors joists are not level causing issues with our lvp flooring. The shower/tub inserts we have allow water to leak down our drywall, causing it to peel and bubble. Caulk and patches were their solution and are not working. Our stairs pulled away from the exterior wall they were attached to so far that my child could stick her hand in between the gap. AH simply lag bolted the stair frame to the wall studs to remedy without telling us that it is a major structural issue. We have the Cumberland and have horrible issues with temperature and humidity regulation. We were told only upon our walk through that this is an issue with this model they have been getting complaints about. The temp from one floor to another can be up to 10 degrees in difference and in the summer months the humidity levels are so high that it causes our smoke alarms to go off because they sense a change in the air density. Bill suggests it is impossible yet it happens each summer and the smoke alarms test fine. The thermostat we bought often reads well over 60% humidity which is extremely high and the opposite for the winter months. AH suggests we are using our fresh air intake improperly but no matter the adjustment the problem persists. We have had mold in our basement, have had water running behind our electrical panel from cracks in the basement. We have land issues with the placement of our home so close to the property line. We were told " we should have ordered a survey"... when in actuality we provided them with one before we closed on our property. No response when pointing that out. We have issues with culverts that were placed on the property, grading of property around house and driveway. Fought to no avail and had to pay another company to fix at our expense. No BBB participation for a reason. They remove bad reviews and leave what suits them. Walk away before its too late.

I was thrilled to begin building my first new house. Now after waiting on Bill Crum to finish it I have nothing but regrets. Greg, the main contractor was never on site when I stopped in. I only saw him when something was wrong and I requested we meet. One example is the dryer vent was not hooked up and the drywall was put up over it. I told Greg but he didn't believe me. He had me look through all my photos because he didn't want to take down a couple pieces of drywall. I insisted. I was correct. My tub was installed with a crack. Water poured through the ceiling to my bathroom below. Bill Crum went against manufacturer and industry standards that called for a complete replacement by only wanting to patch the tub even after being told I would only be able to use it as a shower due to iminate failure of the patch. He said I was making a mountain out of a mole hill. I paid to replace the tub with a steel tub and tile to avoid more issues with their inferior products. I told Bill I expect reimbursement for half the labor. He offered an insulting $350.00. My gutters have an inverted fall. Four people have looked at them just to waste my time taking off work. Bill himself came a few weeks ago. I refused to take off work again and meet him. My work order inquiries and emails to Bill are still going unanswered and nothing is being done to fix the gutters. I filed a complaint with the BIA only to have Bill tell me they would side with him. I guess we will see. Back door does not latch. Carpet company has never shown up and painting not finished. Ive put in numerous work orders and sent many emails. I posted a review on their Facebook page and it mysteriously disappeared along with another negative review from someone else. Do yourself a favor and go with another builder.

My wife and I just finished our house and it was by far the worst experience we’ve had working with a contractor. The only bright spot of the process was the sales process and house selections after that. As soon as we were turned over to the home builders, train ran off the tracks. Started off in permitting which a month longer than what they told us delaying our dig day to middle of October. This delay was explained as they had a new person in the office and they were too busy training her to focus on getting the required permits in time. Annoying as that was, only the tip of the iceberg. Foundations and framing went very quick, too quick as we later found out, but hit a road block in December due to their only window installer having to take 3 weeks off due to a back injury. This put a stop to any other contractors coming in as they complained the house was too cold to work in. Next, the electricians proceeded to fail 5 rough inspections costing us a month due to their inability to comprehend what the inspector was asking for. After that we were told that the diamondkote siding we selected was back ordered which caused more delays as the house wasn’t officially “dried in” to allow for drywall and insulation. This was a product that they sold us on and neither the supervisors or installers had a clue how to install. We had to stop them after the first day due to not installing the correct flashing or painting cut ends of the material. Last fun item, we decided to install our own interior insulation and after a dispute with AHHs insulation company due to poorly installed rafter baffles, that companies employees pissed all over the walls in our second bathroom. Shows you what type of subs they have working for them. Long story short, contract listed build completion within 180 days, we moved in on day 206. When trying to discuss builder penalties they took the easy way out and cited the virus being the issue and were not liable. Do your homework and find a builder with experienced project managers that actually follow up on subcontractors to make sure things are done correctly. Save yourself the stress and pass on this company

Comment from American Heritage Homes:
I am truly sorry that this was such a bad experience for you and your family. The home did take longer than we would expect and there were some unfortunate circumstances and events that took place during the project. Things can and do go wrong on new home building projects from time to time and we believe it is our ability to respond to these problems that defines us as a homebuilder.
We accept your criticism, have taken them to heart and pledge to do our best to ensure that we do better in the future.
I think there is a misunderstanding on the permitting issue. It was not a problem with our people that caused the delay but rather with personnel changes at your local Zoning Department. They took 60 days to issue your zoning permit, in spite, of our diligent and persistent efforts.
Regrettably, the issue with the insulation personnel did occur. We used a different insulation company for your project because we were only responsible for part of the work. Our Production Manager offered to replace all affected materials including reframing and the area was thoroughly cleaned. In 25 years of business this has never happened to us before. We will not use this company again.
Again, we are sincerely sorry that your project went 26 days over schedule and that this was such a bad experience for you. We will learn from these delays and do better in the future. We did take care of all the issues that were raised, and in the end; you have a beautiful home that we are proud of and will stand behind.

Communication with construction manager is mediocre at best. With a small builder like American heritage they struggle with details and correspondence when they take on too many projects. Quality is good overall, however a few missed details here and there are costly in terms of both dollars and time.

I cannot say enough about the home build team at American Heritage Homes! From the co-owner on down, everyone is amazingly personable, friendly, thorough, upfront, and flexible. They helped us build a custom home on acreage with its unique challenges based originally on plans that I brought to their offices. Their professionalism and kindness, not to mention insight, really made the difference for us! As our plans evolved over time, every detail was addressed and additional charm added. We wouldn't have such a warm and inviting home today without their drive, inspiration, and kindness. If you're looking for a home builder who goes the extra mile and means it, this is your next stop on the road to a great home.

Our Sales Agent was wonderful. Very helpful and fun to be with during a stressful time of picking our house plan that worked for our needs. She helped us in making the changes to the plan that worked best. We chose a ranch home which was what we wanted and found the look that fit into our price point. Their standard line of products that they offer is amazing like granite counter tops and Kichler lighting. Would strongly recommend American Heritage Homes to anyone no matter your price point or knowledge of building a custom home.

Comment from American Heritage Homes:
Thanks so much for the fantastic review Johnna. Look forward to seeing the final photos of the finished project!
My wife and I contracted with American Heritage Homes to build our new home. What had attracted us was their attention to detail and energy efficiency. We had followed them for several years while we searched for property to build on. We attended a number of open house showings, I did research on the internet through consumer groups, and looked through county court records in areas where they built. I requested contacts for previous customers and received a list of about 30 who had agreed to allow contact. About half responded to an email query. Without exception all the respondent's replies were very positive. I received several offers to view their homes, and one offer for dinner.
During the design process we worked with Suzanne. Rarely have I worked with someone as knowledgeable and professional as her. Add a wonderful personality to that mixture and that is Suzanne. Through the first half of the construction process the construction foreman was Bryan. We had several problems with him. The owner, Bill addressed them immediately. I was told Bryan has since discovered an urge to work in areas not as closely tied to residential, customer oriented business and has since left the company. Bill has a marvelous group of sub-contractors he uses, most of which have been with AHH for 10 years or more. I would speak with them whenever possible. Bill is himself an encyclopedia of building, and does what is needed to build a home that measures up to his high standards. Suzi makes the office and the accounting and fund transfers seamless, and is always ready to answer any question. And last to be mentioned is Curtis. Curtis took over as construction boss for the second half of our build. He is unique. He has wide experience in the construction field, and an uncanny natural aptitude as a craftsman. I really enjoyed working with him, with his eye for detail, and his open, honest personality. Overall I would highly recommend this company, and would gladly use them again were we to want to build.

This was our first build and we are so happy with our choice of American Heritage as our builder. They were very professional as we moved thru this build together. They kept closely to their time lines and kept the build moving. All builds will have delays but ours were minimal. We built in 2014 one of American Heritages busiest years. Communication is necessary between builder and homeowner, and our questions were usually answered next day by the builder. Issues were minimal, and we experienced professional contractors who took pride in their work and have worked for American Heritage for many years. I would recommend American Heritage to anyone interested in building a new home.

From the time we sat down with Suzanne to choose our plans we knew American Heritage would be easy to work with. They are a very honest company. We have built with them two times and have also sent friends to them. It is not realistic to think that nothing will "go wrong" when building a home. However, you need to choose which builder will work for you and make the house the way you imagined and fix anything that may go wrong. They want you to be happy. We have visited with many builders on the way to choosing the one for us and I was not impressed and quite honestly they seemed pretty shady. We would highly recommend going in to see Suzanne. She is literally the nicest sales person you will ever meet. Very happy with Curtis also, the one in charge of the build. Great company! Great people!

We built with AHH in early 2012 (broke ground in mid-January and moved in on 7/4/12). Our experience was exceptionally good; largely because of the people. Suzanne was great to work with during the planning stages. During construction we worked directly with Bill Crum (owner) and Curtis Smith (site manager). They are all very good, ethical people. Curtis even came back in August to run equipment that I had rented to help prepare our lot for grass seeding.
Again, the people at AHH are very good. When things came up (unplanned – e.g. needing to install catch basins near the road, adding a small ‘door’ upstairs) they consistently treated us very well; handling these changes in a very cost effective way and not trying to make a lot of money on them. They are talented, intelligent, know their business, and most importantly are good, moral people. I could not give a higher recommendation; I’m a mechanical engineer with some construction experience so I have a good basis with which to assess/compare.
