Gibralter Custom Builders took on the task of restoring an 1880s small town railroad station that had major foundation and floor joist rot issues. Dingey Movers of Zanesville lifted up the building, cleaned out the old foundation, and built a new one. We had to deal with FEMA regulations concerning repairs of a building in a flood plain, which required that the original building end up three feet above its previous location. The architect was Mark Clapsaddle of Granville, who did a wonderful job of designing the restoration, meeting all the government regulations concerning floodplains, building codes, handicapped access, safety, and zoning, producing a building that captures the old time small town railroad station with modern facilities. While the building was elevated, Gibralter repaired all the old floor joists, including a major beam down the center of the building. After the building was lowered onto the new foundation, Gibralter removed all the old siding, repaired the rotten wall supports, added insulation, and finished the walls with new siding and custom cut battens, and paint. Inside, two new modern, wheelchair accessible, bathrooms were added inside the building. The old dropped ceilings were removed, air handling was added, and everything painted. New flooring was added in a couple of places and treated to look like the old flooring. All the work was done very well and kept in budget. The oddball things that happen in the restoration of old buildings were all handled creatively and securely, thanks to the knowledge of Brett Black and his workers. We are very pleased at the work that was done.
