Mary Tobias Miller has been an interior designer since 1983. She moved to New York City after earning a BA degree in Art History and Design from Hollins College. She then attended the New York School of Design Entree program, but then later went on to get her AAS degree from Parsons School of Design and The New School. Initially, Mary worked for Suzie Frankfurt interiors in New York. They designed a wide range of homes for prominent New Yorkers as well as many celebrities. Mrs. Frankfurt was friends with Andy Warhol and, in fact, did a book with him. In addition to managing Suzie Frankfurt’s office, Mary’s duties included purchasing fine antiques from Sotheby’s and Christies at auction for the firm’s clients. She was later hired by Sotheby’s to work the evening and weekend Art and Antique Auctions. She did this in addition to working her interior design jobs during the week. After completing her degree at Parsons, Mrs. Miller added Commercial Interior Design to her resume by taking a job with Tom Lee Ltd, run by Sarah Lee. This firm specified interiors for many of the fine Hotels in New York and around the Country. Before starting her own firm in 1986, Mrs. Miller took a design position with Dean Patterson Bauer of New York. Mrs. Bauer’s expertise lay in the extremely detailed work of full scale renovations on the Upper East Side and Upper West Side of New York. It was here that Mrs. Miller learned first-hand the intricacies of the plumbing; electrical and cabinetry construction necessary to meet the stringent codes of New York City. The firm also had to meet the needs and high standards of their very discerning clientele. In 1986, Mary Tobias Interiors (later Mary Tobias Miller Interior Design)was established. At this point, Mrs. Miller was able to employ all the skills she had gleaned from her education and on the job experience. She later went on to work as an importer of French and English Antiques with a Paris based business partner. More recently, she opened a b o d e in Charlotte North Carolina. Abode houses a retail showroom of transitional and vintage home furnishings and accessories. In addition, Mary Tobias Miller’s full-service Interior Design Studio operates out of the showroom. Mary Miller did an exceptional job redesigning our family room, kitchen, and breakfast room. She was a pleasure to work with, and the finished product turned out more beautiful than I'd imagined. Mary was easily able to decipher my vision for the space and add special details that made the rooms look polished and timeless, yet current and fresh. She was very conscious of our budget throughout the whole process and helped to expedite delivery on several items so that the rooms would be ready for a party we hosted (she even arranged for a loaner rug when the one we chose was backordered). She tried to save us money wherever she could by sourcing lower-cost options without sacrificing quality. Mary has extensive resources, from fabric vendors to furniture makers, which enabled her to create a truly custom space for our family. Abode, Mary's retail store, is absolutely beautiful, and was a great place to pick up accessories, artwork, and final details to finish off the project. Mary is a kind, creative, well-travelled, and intelligent person, and we will definitely use her for any future projects.
I would HIGHLY recommend Mary! She came out to my office and really got a feel for what I was looking to do and listened to me, my needs, and budget. Mary was punctual, professional and made my office into a beautiful, comfortable and inviting space.
It was an absolute pleasure to work with Mary. I am a single, young professional living in a condominum in Myers Park. I wanted a polished but relaxing enviornment to come home to at the end of a hectic day and now I have it!!! I am constantly recieving compliments from friends. Not only was Mary able to work within my budget, she helped me picked pieces that work perfectly in my current space but will transition into a larger home later on. She also helped me incorporate pieces I already had into my "new" look. Mary is lovely and everything in her store is GORGEOUS!! Lifetime client.

I highly recommend Mary Miller. She has a great sense of her clients' style which makes decision making easy. Unlike other designers, she has a large retail store which allows clients to see furniture and accessories in person. I have worked on two large house renovation projects with Mary and will definitely continue to work with her in the future.
Mary T. Miller is a friend as well as the interior designer for our home in Charlotte, NC. She has helped integrate newer contemporary fabrics and furnishings with our traditional oriental rugs and family antiques. Mary understands the reluctance to part with heirlooms while understanding our desire for a more modern "chic" home to accomodate four active grandchildren. Mary's eye for space planning and design is exceptional. Whether the job is an update to an existing decor or a major renovation, my husband and I highly recommend Mary T. Miller Interior Design and her shop, Abode.
Mary is amazing!!! I hired her to redesign my formal living room. She worked within the timeframe and budget that we requested, and more importantly, she considered our lifestyle when selecting the furniture. I really wanted an all-white formal room, but we have two dogs (a Lab and a King Charles Cavalier) and a 3 month year old baby. Needless to say, there is a high probability that stains will occur:) Mary took my request for a white room and selected frabics that gave us the 'airy' feeling that we wanted, but not fabrics that easily showed dirt or hair. The results are AMAZING! I get so many compliments on where I got my furniture and the colors of the furniture. I plan to use Mary in furture projects with our house.
Mary helped with my renovation from start to finish. She designed the kitchen and created a warm welcoming environment for every day living and entertaining. She gave the space flair but kept it warm and inviting. I can't get my three grown children off the couch she designed and had built. I love every detail.
