The Roleys changed their mind about the type of hinges they wanted to use. When I explained how this would impact the overall quality of the job and suggested the option of refacing the cabinet boxes instead of refinishing they agreed that it was the best solution.
The veneer was the exact same finish as the utility cabinets that we had previously installed and they were happy with that.
We did not remove the veneer and the next day when we got there their 12 year old son was using an electric iron and Goo Be Gone to remove the veneer, as I had pointed out the health hazards of using the manufacturers solvent and that I would not do it in an occupied house putting them, their 9 children and pets at risk.
They communicated that they were having a painter paint the cabinets. A few days later Mrs Roley called me and on a 50 minute phone call apologized and asked me if we would paint the cabinets. I declined. She asked me if I though she should install new cabinets instead of painting, I said yes. She then told me that due to an inheritance her in-laws were going to give them the money to do the upgrade and asked me if I would design and quote. I was hesitant, but compassionate to her and her desire to have a nice kitchen. She accepted the quote and signed an agreement. Over Thanksgiving her mother in-law and sister in-law talked her out of painted cabinets and into the stained.
We only purchased 1 gallon of the stain they selected for the job ,( including the pantries) not 3 different stains. They just could not seem to understand that every piece of the same wood does not stain exactly the same. Even their contractor friend told them on speaker phone that wood is wood and it does stain differently. I also provided them with a Minwax brochure that explained the scientifical reasons for this.
Before they stopped the job that day Mr Roley refused to give me or let me look at a copy of their other concerns. We were never permitted to return.
All custom-made doors, drawer fronts and cabinet boxes were given to the Roleys. The Roleys received goods and services in excess of money paid. I do not feel I can collect the final payment on the job since I was not able to complete the job, though not my decision.
There are many more details and if anyone would like more documented details I will be happy to provide.
