I'm posting this to help other people not end up in the same situation I found myself in.
If you want professionally installed floors with acceptable wood, DO NOT HIRE BRETZ.
I asked them to locate Birch or Maple hardwood flooring. They said they could not locate any in the time frame I needed. The salesperson showed me a sample of Hickory that was mostly light like Birch. She said he called the distributor and they said about 90% of it would be light like in the sales sample board. I did not know much about Hickory and I mistakenly trusted Bretz's salesperson. She suggested purchasing an extra 10% so we could eliminate the dark wood. I gave her a 50% deposit.
When the wood arrived it was about 65% dark and very busy. She gave me a choice of not accepting this wood, but said it would be a couple months until they had an installer available. My floor was being replaced due to damage done in my condo and was being paid for by my insurance company. I did not think my insurance company would pay for me to be in a hotel for a couple months until their installer would be available (my guess is she knew this upfront and was negotiating with me). I gave them permission to move forward and decided I would just have to live with this very busy and dark flooring.
The installer, Darren, had a very immature attitude and poor work habits. He kept threatening to quit if I would not accept things as he wanted. An example is he cut a board to short and it did not reach the wall. I asked him to replace the board. Instead he put a piece of laminate plastic in the gap. I told him that was not OK and he walked off the job. He did things like this several times and the salesperson had to keep getting him back on the job. Also, he did a terrible job with installing the new baseboards. They were gapping by about 1\2 away from the wall in many places and despite paying to have filler put in gaps. Also, the boards were not even lined up and had big gaps between many of the boards. He said he was too busy to do it and I had to hire someone to finish it.
About a week after moving back in the Hickory floors started cupping, splitting and gapping. Each day it continued to get worse. The owner, Dale Bretz, was attempting to blame it on me! He eventually hired a specialized inspector who said it was all his fault. This particular flooring requires 35-55% humidity and it not suitable for Colorado's low humidity. By law, he needed to disclose this to me before my purchasing and his installing. He initially still blamed it on me and told me I could purchase individual board as needed to replace and hire someone else to do the work. After much back and forth, he eventually offered to refund my deposit, however, that would leave me with the expenses of removing everything and all the other expenses involved in install a non-damaged floor (including moving myself and all my furniture out again). I offered to let him remove the bad flooring and install non-damaged flooring. He refused. I ended up having to hire another company to remove the flooring and install new flooring. I'm out about $8,000 and was living in boxes for months due to this company with bad ethics.
They are a VERY unethical company with an owner who is more concerned about his profit than serving his customer if there is a problem.
UPDATE: I see Bretz’s response below. The knew EXACTLY what happened. The flooring was inappropriate for Colorado’s low humidity (and they failed to research or inform me) AND the installation was poor. Their distributor hired an inspection company and the report was given to Bretz and myself.
Being left with $8,000 in expenses to clean up the mess they created is not what “good\ethical company’s” do. I’m still amazed they think appologizing is enough!

Comment from Bretz Interiors:
We are sorry that we disappointed you. We tried our level best to provide great customer service by helping you get things selected and installed quickly since you were in a time crunch and your last installer had walked off the job. Yes, we had an issue with your hardwood and are still not sure what caused the issue to occur but after trying to resolve the issue with you we felt that you might be able to find another company that might be a better fit for you and your project. Rarely do we back out of a project and can usually work through things that occur. Having a happy client is our ultimate goal and unfortunately, we did not feel that we could achieve that with you so felt it better to return your deposit and give you additional funds to get your floor back to where it was before we started. Again, we are sorry that your experience with us was not what you expected.

Pat has always been professional, honest and responsive. She's helped us select great products for three homes over the course of the last 30 years (can that be true?!). We consider her and Bretz a trusted family friend.

Eileen, it has always been a pleasure to work with you. I always love catching up with your family particularly since our kids were very young when we first started working together and now they are adults. Thank you for the kind words and continued loyalty to Bretz Interiors.

This is our second home improvement project to work on with Bretz. Pat is a good listener and quickly helps us with our selections. She coordinated both new carpeting and wood floor refinishing for us. She communicated with us promptly on schedules and was responsive to questions/concerns. Bob did a good job laying the carpet and was pleasant and responsive to what we wanted done. Alex was professional, very pleasant to deal with on the wood floor refinishing. (our wood floors look better than they did when they were new)! Diane is always pleasant and helpful when I call or drop by for something. Bretz made this project as painless as a big project like this can be! A small family business I would highly recommend to everyone.

Every contact with the staff at Bretz was pleasant and professional. Pat was able to select the best color options to help me in making selections for floor tile, backsplash tile and grout. She helped direct me regarding choices for countertop, appliance colors and best choices for cupboard hardware, lighting and faucets. Her guidance made my experience much less stressful.

Bretz Interiors replaced all of my window coverings & carpet throughout the house. Pat was very professional & helpful giving me recommendations for each room. She brought numerous samples & she reviewed the good points & bad points of each of the ones I liked the best. I was very happy with the results & would highly recommend Bretz Interiors.

We always use Bretz for our home and rental projects. They have done window dressings, carpet and flooring. We have always been very pleased with their professional services in every aspect of the jobs. Pat Fear is a joy to work with on the initial quotes and always has excellent advice for us to consider. Their installers are professional and we have never had any problems with installations. We recommend them all the time to family and friends.

Commented: Do these shades clean up grease/wine/tomato sauce/water splatters? The other option is to keep the shade raised while you are cooking to avoid any potential splatters on the fabric.
