Mint as groundcover?

Couple years into gardening now and I've spent the last 2 weeks crawling around my yard pulling onions and dandelions, then mulching. Looking for a better way...

one thing that grows great for me is mint (the common herb) like you get at a big box store. It has really taken over the area it was planted in which has got me thinking: can this be used as a groundcover throughout my perennial gardens to choke-out weeds/seedlings? Seems to grow nice and thick and the runners spread it everywhere fast.

id want something that the plants I've planted will still come through every year of course.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this idea. My beds are full sun and the weeds love them!

thanks!!!

i believe this is spearmint
