Soil by definition is organic - it is all derived from naturally occurring materials. Top soil may not be what you need or want. Top soil is just the 4-6 inches of surface soil removed before construction or any cultivation. It can be full of rocks, roots and weeds and devoid of much in the way of organic matter.......or it can be a pretty decent planting medium. Just depends on what is available and where it was obtained.

I'd have to question the notion that your soil is not "good for gardening". While cows can compact soil, they also enrich it significantly by leaving behind their cow pies :-) It may be that the soil just needs some tilling to loosen things up and aerate. Or if heavily compacted, more organic matter like bark or compost would be far more appropriate than just top soil.....which can be anything the distributor cares to label as such :-)) But generally is very lacking in OM.....and OM is what makes a bad soil decent and a decent soil great.

Thank you for your advice! I did not think that I could use the soil after it was trampled on for awhile.... When I got Top soil from Tagro - it was really good and greens were lush the next year.... I guess I will need to test it and see if I can start to cultivate it without top soil... Thanks for recommedations!

I know lots of things about how to garden in WA (western ) state.... But I will have to learn how to garden in Boise area Id, as I am sure it is quite different. I wonder if anyone can recommend a good book on Gardening in Idaho?

I am researching Idaho gardening for a friend who just moved to Nampa from Phoenix AZ, does Sunset still make the Western Garden Book? I've always thought it to be an excellent reference for looking up climate suitability of plants....I did just read that the soils are likely to be alkaline which is totally opposite of Western WA and OR....
