Check out "upholstery foam" or "multipurpose foam" in a roll.

Foams like that easily rip. They compress down to a minimum thickness easily and spikes will jump right through that.

Something like hard polyethylene foam might work, but it would be very cumbersome to fabricate the shape and wrap the strips of that together.

You would think someone would make a penetration-proof blanket.
