Yes, a photo would help. I like jck's first example with the garland. Command hooks can come in handy with securing. You don't have to wrap it around the column. Weave lights through the garland, then attach it down the front of the columns with the hooks.

This is from Command.com regarding their outdoor hooks. It mentions not using the hooks on brick, but we use them on our exterior brick every year with no problem.

"Command Outdoor hooks can also be used on smooth, sealed and finished surfaces including vinyl siding and fences, doors, windows, decks, gutters and trim. The Outdoor Product line is not recommended for use on rough surfaces, such as cement board, brick or rough-sawn wood."

I appreciate the help, I'll take a photo tomorrow. It will make more sense with a photo, but the wrapping under the gutters and soffit are also aluminum. I tried garland last year with Command Hooks like the photos above but they absolutely will not stick, will not stick to the brick either. I'm not sure if this is because it's aluminum or it's the cold that caused the hooks to fall off.

Sarah, hmmm, did you use the outdoor hooks? I'm not sure about aluminum but they definitely stick to brick for us. Let's see if your photo can help.
