    Oh just beautiful! I still have the afghan my beloved Nana gave me upon my college graduation more than 40 years ago! I swear it's as nice as the year she gave it to me. I use it all the time, and just throw it in the washer and dryer when it needs it.

    • Honestly, your workmanship (workwomanship?) is so pretty, I like it best in a solid simple color where you see its beauty. Who wouldn't treasure that?

    Thank you all. I hope they like it. I really like this pattern and the hand it yields. It's crochet, but because it is done the long way rather than across, so it looks finer, more tailored, than many other crochet patterns. This is the 4th time I've made this pattern.

    hhireno, I finished the last one in mid-Feb and I finished this one this past weekend so maybe 5 weeks, but it was worked on very intermittently, so it's hard to say how many hours it actually took. This one is a large one as the couple are both tall and substantial....much larger than what I usually make for Project Linus.

    It was 5 weeks well spent! I have time, I wish I had your talent.

    @Annie Deighnaugh

    Beautiful, just beautiful.

    I make afghans also, as a hobby, because I have not perfected my hand and spacing. I do give them as gifts, but only as a “look what I made you” gift. Not as an occasion gift. Their are not perfect, many imperfections, but they keep me busy and happy.

    Do tell, what brand and kind of yarn you used for this beautiful afghan. Also the name of the stitch you used.

    I use the one pound yarn from Lion's Brand....I like their yarn a lot. And it's washable which is important for an afghan.

    It is not a name of stitch but a pattern that combines rows of SC in the back loop with rows of crossed DC. It's an old one from the old Workbasket Magazine if you remember them.

    You do 3 rows of SC in the back loop, then 3 rows of crossed DC, then 3 rows of SC in the back loop and 1 row of crossed DC, and just repeat. The pattern is worked along the length of the afghan rather than the width. I finished off the two unfinished ends in a shell stitch...the other sides I just started and ended the afghan with a row of sc.

    @Annie Deighnaugh regarding the yarn, i saw that both Lion Brand and Caron yarns each have a pounder. Do you have a preference for one over the other? Do they both have a nice hand and finish?

  • last year
    last modified: last year

    blubird, my preference is for Lion Brand....the hand is better. Red Heart also has a one pounder which is my least favorite...it tends to pill a lot.

    @Annie Deighnaugh thanks for the Lion brand rec. I'd crossed Red Heart off my list a while ago It used to be fine yarn for afghans, but it has gotten so coarse I cant stand the feel of it.
