As you can spend a great deal on your outdoor space, consider investing in furniture covers to protect your investment from the effects of sun, dirt, tree sap etc. We keep the cushions, pillows, and umbrellas in an outdoor box when not in use and have some fun outdoor fabric covers for furniture we use less often. "Knick knacks" are kept to a minimum to help the space feel more open. In the winter, we push all the furniture together in a corner and cover it with a huge waterproof outdoor cover (leaves room in the garage for the car) and the cushions and soft furnishings are brought inside.

We have a lovely pavered backyard covered porch extending down into a large patio. We use both of them frequently. However, they are minimally furnished with inexpensive outdoor fabric chairs/ rockers & small tables bought from our local Outdoor Store. We live in a country neighborhood outside the Houston metro area. It is quite buggy and there are snakes and other critters that love to burrow under patio furniture and in the cushions. Ugh! I have seen too many people come leaping out of their nice cushioned furniture because of hidden spiders and other creepy crawlers. I will stay with my simple patio furniture and not worry about getting bit by something.
