Joey: my mom lived in an apartment building for people with disabilities that the government of BC designed, built and subsidized. It was lovely. She had a heat-proof pull-out under her wall over, all at wheel chair height. Her over door swung sideways instead of down. Great arrangement that I have often envied. Friends did that with a microwave they had in a kitchen storage wall. worked fine. I think I would still opt for the drawer style microwave because I like to scoop additional ingredients into whatever is cooking in my microwave and for, me, it would be a great solution. We have no upper cabinets over the main counter because it is all windows looking out on the backyard.

docmaker26 (YES!) and....I wish that 'side open' was more mainstream in so many things - standard ovens, for example!

I have my microwave in my island above a deep wide drawer. My problem is that I cannot see the controls on the front of the microwave. I am trying to find a solution to illuminate just the front of the microwave. Anyone have a solution?

I've considered a motion sensor closet light above the microwave (no trim kit installed and about 1" open above). But the front of the microwave is nearly flush with the front of the cabinet.

Or LED strip lights, but not sure where/how to place an on/off switch so I can turn it only when needed.

I am afraid I'll just be illuminating around the microwave and not the front.
