Kitchen Sinks: Fireclay Brims With Heavy-Duty Character
Cured at fiery temperatures, fireclay makes for farmhouse sinks that just say no to scratches and dents
Perhaps whoever coined the phrase "Everything but the kitchen sink" was referring to a sink made from fireclay. The heavy-duty material, created when clay is heated and cured at upward of 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit, is so dense, in fact, that oftentimes a professional installer is required to modify the surrounding counter and cabinets to support its gargantuan weight.
This means that the nonporous material, in addition to being easily cleanable, is almost impossible to scratch, dent or crack, making it great for sinks that see a lot of rough action. So feel free to load it up with steel pots, copper pans, thick glasses, metal jars — basically everything but the ... well, you get the idea.

Advantages: When it comes to durability and attractiveness, a fireclay sink certainly fits the bill. Resistant to acids, alkalies, chips and scratches, the harder-than-rock material is extremely resilient and can stand the test of time.
Disadvantages: Fireclay sinks are extremely heavy, so professional installation is recommended. The supporting counter and base cabinetry may need to be modified to support their weight. An installer should also consider that most fireclay sinks require wall- or counter-mounted faucets.

Maintenance: Nonporous fireclay makes for a stain-resistant and easy-to-clean surface. A rinsing and wipe-down are recommended after each use to prevent water spotting.
To keep the sink smooth, consider applying a thin layer of liquid wax to the basin about once a month. Apply the wax when the sink is drained and allow the sink to dry before using it.
