Kitchen Makeovers
Steel Is the Secret Ingredient in This Farmhouse Kitchen
To get a modern industrial look in a rural Pennsylvania kitchen, designers use steel and slate
Metal. Each cabinet door face is made up of diamond plate steel and weighs about 65 pounds. For hardware, Rost used rebar (repurposed steel), adding to the authentic industrial design.
Wood. Reclaimed barn wood that Rost bought and milled gives a rustic backdrop to the new kitchen. Reclaimed beams cross the 8-foot ceiling, while planks were repurposed as a backsplash.
Shelves. Weathered steel forms floating shelves around the range wall.
Contrast. Slate tiles on the floor add to the cool gray palette, while custom wood cabinetry painted white offsets the dark countertops on the perimeter.

Scope of work. The clients were able to keep the layout and appliances, but they replaced everything else.
Bright idea. Rost installed steel brackets to hang adjustable cable lights with MR15 lightbulbs, which provide good task lighting. Barn wood wraps a bay window, which was part of the original kitchen.

Buffet. At one end of the kitchen stands a custom wood-and-steel buffet. The upper cabinets house serving pieces; the lower cabinets store dog food.
Pet station. Across from the buffet is a custom built-in dog food station. Steel bowls are removable for cleaning and filling. A spigot is plumbed in for refilling the water bowl.
