5. Storage Galore
Yolanda Badia of YB Interiors packed this U-shaped, 260-square-foot kitchen with storage while keeping it bright and airy. On the left, wall-height light gray cabinetry (Stonington Gray by Benjamin Moore) has an upper run of glass-front cabinets. On the right, white cabinetry (Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore) mixes with glass-panel uppers and floating wood shelves, plus a marble-look quartz countertop. Placing electrical outlets on the bottom of the upper cabinets allowed Badia to keep the matte white herringbone-pattern backsplash uninterrupted.

4. Go for the Bold
A heavily veined stone backsplash with an integrated 5-inch shelf is one of the bold elements in this Austin, Texas, kitchen by Etch Design Group. Others include a large arched metal-framed window, a ribbed-wood island and three oversize pendants hanging from large ceiling beams. The perimeter cabinetry, painted in Sherwin-Williams’ Shiitake, mostly fades into the background to let those elements shine.

3. Earthy Energy
This Washington, D.C.-area kitchen by DuVäl Design has a certain gravitas, compliments of a hefty wood vent hood and oak base cabinets in a driftwood finish. Uppers painted in Sherwin-Williams’ Dorian Gray blend into the delicate marble herringbone tile backsplash, keeping the rich natural wood tone from overpowering the room. Pale countertops and brass cage lanterns have a similarly lightening effect.

2. Stone Stunner
Large slabs of stunning Blue Marine quartzite make the island the center of attention in this Denver kitchen, which was designed by Robin Bryant of Factor Design Build after the homeowners found her on Houzz. Meanwhile, on one wall, slim Shaker-style white oak cabinets are topped by concrete-look quartz perimeter countertops that continue partly up the wall to form a backsplash. And on the adjacent wall, a bank of milky glass-front cabinets breaks up the wall of oak.

In Carlsbad, California, Valletta Design Group gave this creamy kitchen richness and depth with a variegated beige tile backsplash, brass hardware, marbled countertops, a medium-tone wood island base and floating shelf and a knotty wood floor. The vintage-style pendant lighting and sconces may be small in size, but they add heaps of charm.
