El DoradoTransitional Kitchen, New York

Meticulously crafted cabinets, thick slabs of marble and wood, and reflective glass and stainless-steel surfaces create a workspace that functions well for serious cooks—or “cocktails only.” Smart storage—like the floor-to-ceiling wine rack—keeps it clutter-free.

Beware using the F&B Blackened - it's lovely but a chameleon as light changes. I have it in a bathroom and it looks downright lavender at times.

Hi Danielle. It is a walnut countertop, and yes, it is durable. Maintenance of a wood countertop is a bit more time consuming than a stone or concrete countertop; however, a wood countertop is extremely aesthetically appealing and ideal in some spaces (baker's prep area, dining counter, food chopping block, etc). Best of luck!

This would depend on the size of your home and the roof. Feel free to give us a call and ask directly! Glad you are planning on having someone else do the framing as that is extremely important.

              6. L-shape bench at end of galley. As this photo shows, there is not enough room to fit a table into this Manhattan galley kitchen. In the next photo you can see the solution.

Kitchen runners. Kitchen runner rugs keep feet warm in chilly climates and can balance too-sterile-feeling color schemes. But the best part is that rugs only get better with time, as the wear and tear break the rug in, adding personality and character.

Two items worth noting in this image: An antique runner fits the floor just so and brings in elegance and refinement to a tight space. And notice the shallow counter depths. The typical counter is 22 to 24 inches deep. Reducing that depth will free your clearances and give you some room to breathe.

              7. Throw in color with a rug or runner. My favorite way to create a palette is to start with the colors in a rug. When I have a room with white walls and I'm just starting to think about color, I will hunt for the most colorful rug I can find. It's a great statement that also feels timeless.

Second, as Farrow & Ball's managing director, Tom Helme, pointed out, the quality of these very fugitive 19th-century paints would not have been good enough for our modern-day demands. “Nowadays people want the color on their walls to stay constant. In the past people knew it would change quickly, and they were resigned to it."And third, as I discovered in my journey, many of the old paint colors are now illegal. These include lead white, which was banned in the U.S. in 1977 but which is still used in many countries — as recently as last year, activists in Calcutta, India, were protesting that deities thrown symbolically into the river Ganges during processions should not be painted, as the lead is poisoning the holy river.Wall paint: Blackened, Farrow & Ball

              11. Try a real rug. While you wouldn't want to use a priceless antique directly in front of your stove and sink, most other rugs will hold up surprisingly well in the kitchen. A rug with deep colors and an intricate pattern will hide stains, and the feeling of a wonderfully soft rug underfoot makes cooking a joy.
