Hi Kevin, thank you for the detail shot. I actually need you to upload it to your own set of photos rather than in the comments here. That way I can click "add to ideabook" and it will automatically populate your business name on the photo and link to your profile. Sorry I wasn't more clear.

Janet and Steve - You both have great observation regarding dSPACE Studio's photograph from the Astor Street Residence in Chicago. The Living Room photo was taken the day after the client moved in (no staging was possible at that time). Today, there is art and much more by the owner. A house is always best photographed after the Owner has finished their personalization of their home. In case you are interested, please have a look at the finished room as published in Chicago Home and Garden Magazine (pictures added). Also, in the coming days, you will see this dSPACE Project Featured in Traditional Home Magazine 2015 issue - you can be sure that Traditional Home did a full staging of this home. All the best in 2015. Thank you for appreciating our work. - Kevin Toukoumidis, dSPACE Studio Architecture - Chicago

Thank you very much for your reply... Is it poplar a wood from a tree?
As this part of the world we use gypsum or it called as Plaster of Paris. Its a powder mixed with water and some glue to bind then can mold to any shape.

Poplar is a wood species that is often used in projects where the wood will be painted because it takes paint very well, and the result is a nice smooth finish. In this project the crown, base and picture mold are all custom profiles created from poplar and painted at the same time as the walls. In the US, the top layer of a wall (the part you see) is a material called gypsum or drywall. In other parts of the world, or in older buildings here in the US this wall material might be plaster. In either case, the wood trim is typically applied to the wall and then painted.

Painting ceiling a dark color with revere Pewter? - Hi- My formal living and dinning are in one rectangular room with 8' ceiling height ( older house) with crown moulding. Since it shares wall to the stairs and upstairs hall, I want to keep the wall color soft and airy like Revere Pewter but at the same time formal, however to give the dining and living area a more wow factor/ formal impact, do you think it would be a good idea to go with a dark ceiling such as Kendall Charcoal by BJ or do you think it would close/ weigh the room down since ceilings are low? If you think it would be OK, any suggestions on other dark colors that would compliment Revere Pewter? I really love your work btw! - thanks so much in advance!

Reason why i am asking you that question, because i watched one of decorating house show little while ago that adding mirrors in a space makes bigger….is that why you added those mirrors? I might want to do that to MY LR.

We have custom built a number of these larger mirrors, we typically use 1-1/2 inch x 3 or 4 hardwood lumber. That with the mirror glass which is 3/8 inch makes for a heavy yet obedient piece of furniture. Just place it where you want it and say " don't go anywhere " it won't I promise. Hello, and thank you for your question! On this project, the double drywall step detail is painted to match the ceiling, which is Vanilla
Milkshake by Benjamin Moore in a flat/matte finish. The crown molding, base, and door trim are the same color, but in a semi-gloss, which has a slightly higher sheen
than flat/matte. Our picture rail is identical to the wall color. A detail image that captures the subtle differences can seen below. We hope this helps, and good luck with your project.

Hello, and thank you for your question! The flooring is a rift and
quarter sawn white oak with two coats of a
custom stain blend of 50% ebony and 50% chocolate. Since this is a custom blend from our floor installer we are unable to actually confirm the brand of
stain. If you desire to use such a blend in your space, we always
recommend obtaining at least three samples from your flooring installer.
Just keep in mind, different lighting conditions and color schemes can alter the
perception of the floor stain. Hope this helps and good luck with your

Hi Karen, The length of the wall bump out is 6'-7" for the fireplace. But keep in mind that you may want to lengthen or shorten that measurement based on the fireplace mantel you select. This mantel was the Fontainbleu, marble fireplace from Chesney's and it is 5'-5" long which leaves you with about 6.5" to either side of the fireplace. The bump-out comes 12" into the room and the ceiling height is 10'-8". Thank you for the question and good luck with your project!

Drywall is typically attached using drywall screws and then all seams and screws are taped and mudded for a smooth seamless appearance. Mudding is when you use a thin layer of plaster to smooth out any imperfections and transitions over the walls and ceiling. This ceiling went one step further with a thin layer of plaster over the entire ceiling area for the smoothest finish possible. All edges are treated with a vinyl J-bead that protects the corners and achieves a crisp edge. Thank you for your question and good luck with your project!

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Pangaea Interior Design, Portland, OR added this to Crown Molding: Is It Right for Your Home?
This beautiful home is more contemporary in architecture than the previous two examples. The furnishings are clean-lined, and the neutral color palette feels calming and serene. The ceiling is still pretty high at 10' 6", according to the architect. They chose crown molding in a very simple profile, free of any pattern or ornamentation to fit the space. But before you pass on by thinking this would be easy to duplicate, the next photo shows a detail that makes a difference in the richness of the look without calling overt attention to itself.

What Houzzers are commenting on:

Tabitha Goss added this to Elements of design :Tabitha Goss
2. Large space made to look smaller as you may notice this is a large area the designer broke the area to make it two spaces instead of one big area and added heavy furniture and mirrors to the space.
