![Klopf Architecture](https://st.hzcdn.com/fimgs/81733be708d328b7_2872-w32-h32-b0-p0--.jpg)
Klopf Architecture, Arterra Landscape Architects and Henry Calvert of Calvert Ventures Designed and built a new warm, modern, Eichler-inspired, open, indoor-outdoor home on a deeper-than-usual San Mateo Highlands property where an original Eichler house had burned to the ground.
The owners wanted multi-generational living and larger spaces than the original home offered, but all parties agreed that the house should respect the neighborhood and blend in stylistically with the other Eichlers. At first the Klopf team considered re-using what little was left of the original home and expanding on it. But after discussions with the owner and builder, all parties agreed that the last few remaining elements of the house were not practical to re-use, so Klopf Architecture designed a new home that pushes the Eichler approach in new directions.
One disadvantage of Eichler production homes is that the house designs were not optimized for each specific lot. A new custom home offered the team a chance to start over. In this case, a longer house that opens up sideways to the south fit the lot better than the original square-ish house that used to open to the rear (west). Accordingly, the Klopf team designed an L-shaped “bar” house with a large glass wall with large sliding glass doors that faces sideways instead of to the rear like a typical Eichler. This glass wall opens to a pool and landscaped yard designed by Arterra Landscape Architects.
Driving by the house, one might assume at first glance it is an Eichler because of the horizontality, the overhanging flat roof eaves, the dark gray vertical siding, and orange solid panel front door, but the house is designed for the 21st Century and is not meant to be a “Likeler.” You won't see any posts and beams in this home. Instead, the ceiling decking is a western red cedar that covers over all the beams. Like Eichlers, this cedar runs continuously from inside to out, enhancing the indoor / outdoor feeling of the house, but unlike Eichlers it conceals a cavity for lighting, wiring, and insulation. Ceilings are higher, rooms are larger and more open, the master bathroom is light-filled and more generous, with a separate tub and shower and a separate toilet compartment, and there is plenty of storage. The garage even easily fits two of today's vehicles with room to spare.
A massive 49-foot by 12-foot wall of glass and the continuity of materials from inside to outside enhance the inside-outside living concept, so the owners and their guests can flow freely from house to pool deck to BBQ to pool and back.
During construction in the rough framing stage, Klopf thought the front of the house appeared too tall even though the house had looked right in the design renderings (probably because the house is uphill from the street). So Klopf Architecture paid the framer to change the roofline from how we had designed it to be lower along the front, allowing the home to blend in better with the neighborhood. One project goal was for people driving up the street to pass the home without immediately noticing there is an "imposter" on this lot, and making that change was essential to achieve that goal.
This 2,606 square foot, 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom Eichler-inspired new house is located in San Mateo in the heart of the Silicon Valley.

The AIS Equipment Rack shown employs a unique design, including:
* shock dampers
* three-stage shelf vibration isolation
* integrated power and signal cable routing
* two racks can support a "suspension bridge" top of up to 96" W x 24" D (coming soon)
Mortise and tenon joinery and multiple hardwood options (e.g.; Cherry, Oak, Maple, Mahogany (shown))
Standard shelves are made of maple or MDF (your choice).
Shelves can be replaced with AIS Chambers for RFI/EMI protection.
A custom turntable AIS Chamber that replaces the top shelf is coming soon.
Standard four-shelf rack dimensions (as shown): 30"H x 28"W x 20"D (larger dimensions available upon request).
Damping is accomplished by isolating the shelves from the frame via three stage dampers that isolate vibration and shock vertically and horizontally. This means, for example, that footsteps will not cause your record to skip. This also means that room vibrations will not be picked up by your cartridge or disrupt your CD mechanism. Finally, the rack can absorb minor bumps, effectively protecting your turntable alignment and cartridge needle from damage.
Unlike some other manufacturers of racks who seem to think that audiophiles are easily confused by science, I believe that the audiophile community is incredibly astute and interested in knowing facts, even if the facts require some study to understand.
*Vertical vibration control is only half of the vibration problem:
Vibration is induced independently on both the horizontal axis and vertical axis. So, shelves that only are isolated with "tip toes" or polymer padding on the vertical axis are not in any way isolated from vibration induced on the horizontal axis. This problem is easy to verify by softly tapping the side of the rack with your fingers while your turntable is playing a record. You will hear the tap right through your speakers or the tapping even may cause your needle to skip on the record. More subtle but audible vibration is being induced through all your components on the rack if this happens.
*Metal posts or frames make no sense at all:
All metals resonate audibly and further, hollow metal tubes resonate so efficiently that they are used to make terrific instruments (e.g.; trumpets, flutes, organ pipes). In NO CASE do metal tubes belong as a part of audio equipment rack design - period. In some cases, like solid metal tiptoes, metal does make sense, but never in rack frames or support structures.
Made to order, so please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.

The driving impetus for this Tarrytown residence was centered around creating a green and sustainable home. The owner-Architect collaboration was unique for this project in that the client was also the builder with a keen desire to incorporate LEED-centric principles to the design process. The original home on the lot was deconstructed piece by piece, with 95% of the materials either reused or reclaimed. The home is designed around the existing trees with the challenge of expanding the views, yet creating privacy from the street. The plan pivots around a central open living core that opens to the more private south corner of the lot. The glazing is maximized but restrained to control heat gain. The residence incorporates numerous features like a 5,000-gallon rainwater collection system, shading features, energy-efficient systems, spray-foam insulation and a material palette that helped the project achieve a five-star rating with the Austin Energy Green Building program.

This modern northwest contemporary house was a speculative venture that was one of two side by side homes. The project maximized the views by creating a side entry allowing full windows from all rooms. The stucco, wood and stone veneer exterior creates a modern northwest character. The open floor plans allow for flexible circulation and continuous views from room to room.

Paul Despenas: Since 1995 Midwest Construction has been offering insulated vinyl siding, because we believed in the product in many ways.
Vinyl siding has come a long way since I (Paul Despenas – VP Marketing) installed the companies 1st job in 1982. The product was Alside D-5 Endura Supreme. I drove by the job 6 years later and it was still on the house, wall lines looked good, but the color had faded from nice Beige to a dirty white.
Manufacturers stepped up to the plate and added the right blends of vinyl resins, the addition of color stabilizers, thicker and better material, and the best improvement to vinyl siding was to add laminated foam behind it for strength and energy savings.
Well here is some documented proof to what we have been saying for years, Your new American Classic Insulated Siding will save energy and maintenance over fiber cement siding.
NYSERDA HOME VINYL SIDING INSTITUTE STUDY
NYSERDA Home- In a new study, Insulated Vinyl Siding (Fullback® siding insulation laminated to vinyl siding) proved to outperform fiber cement in multiple categories. The Vinyl Siding Institute (VSI) recently commissioned a study to evaluate the environmental performance of Fullback® Insulated Siding. The Vinyl Siding Institute study was conducted by Newport Ventures, a research and consulting firm with expertise in the housing industry.
Two high-performance homes were built to comply with the rigorous goals of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's (NYSERDA) High Performance Residential Development Challenge, one in Saratoga Springs, NY and one in Burnt Hills, NY. The challenge was conceived to educate home builders on construction of cost-effective, high performance homes designed to achieve 50-60% energy savings above that of typical homes built to New York's stringent energy code. In achieving this goal, both builders involved in the challenge showed preferences for systems that offered both energy savings and affordability. Fullback® Insulated Siding was specified by both builders as a system to help them achieve energy conservation and LEED for Homes.
Fullback V Siding Comparison
BURNT HILLS, NY: Researchers performed a side-by-side field test on the Burnt Hills home to compare Fullback® Insulated Siding against uninsulated fiber cement. This Vinyl Siding Institute study was conducted during the winter on a two story colonial built by Stewart Construction. The thermal imaging clearly indicated that there was less heat loss from the home to the outdoors with the Fullback® Insulated Siding compared to the fiber cement. The exterior surface temperature of the Fullback® Insulated Siding section of the wall was considerably colder, indicating that there was more thermal bridging (heat loss) with the fiber cement product.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY:
In the case of the Saratoga Springs home, the LEED case study found that environmental performance and visual appeal can go hand-in-hand through the use of Fullback® Insulated Siding. This home became the first home in New York's capital region to achieve LEED for Homes' Gold Rating. Sixty eight percent of visitors to the home found the siding to be "very attractive" while 95% agreed that the visual appeal of the Fullback® Insulated Siding was "better than average".
Overall, the study provides documentation that insulated vinyl siding can outperform exterior cladding alternatives on environmental issues while at the same time remaining aesthetically pleasing.

This year’s Garden Tour showcases a trio of gardens which comprise a ten-acre land parcel shared mostly by members of the same family. Each of the gardens has been professionally landscaped by Peter Strelkow, of HS2G Inc., yet each has a distinct identity.
After ten years, homeowners Albert and Ana commissioned Peter to achieve a new vision for their garden. Peter was a natural choice since he had done the original design. To facilitate this new vision some plants were removed, others relocated, and many new ones were added in an altogether new design conceptualization. The result is an extraordinary, truly show-stopping landscape composition.
This garden is a true oasis. Multiple layers of palms are the first vision. Elegant royal palms flank both sides of the driveway and smaller silver-thatched fan palms, Copernicia prunifera, line either side parallel to the street in double rows. The main entrance is marked with four large keystone columns crowned with a saucer of elegant cycads, Dioon mereolea. To the right, a trio of cycads, Dioon spinulosum, nest among the prunifera palms and continues the tropical feeling. Orange Epidendrum orchids add wonderful color. Adjacent are three sculptural small, leafless, spiny trees, Pacypodium rutanburgianum. This native of Madagascar looks more like a work of art than a plant. Notice the delicate white flowers at the branch terminals. A clump of Moroccan fan palms adds a sash of silver, while a large yellow and green bromeliad and Yucca filaments ‘Color Guard’ add texture and color.
The foundation plantings to the right feature a large cluster of cabada palms surrounded by colorful bromeliads. Two large, elegant imperial bromeliads are the focal point here. Their red hues are echoed by red-flowering ginger and masses of brilliantly colored crotons, ‘Eleanor Roosevelt’. Two large cycads, Dioon rzedowski surrounded by creamy bromeliads mark the house entrance.
The left side of the house features an extraordinary bed of palms – Licuala grandis and Kentiotopis oliviformis. Tall and shorter, palmate and pinnate, olive green and lime green planted in a checker-board pattern with Anthurium ‘Black Dragon’ filling the understory with spectacular form and color.
The central part of the yard retains large clumps of indigenous saw palmetto, original to the property. They are enhanced by plantings of Farfugium and colorful ‘Dreadlocks’ crotons.
Homeowners Albert and Ana love to entertain family and friends in their charming old-Florida styled home. “I believe that gardens are meant to be shared,” said Albert, who has a life-long passion for plants. “I want people to feel as if they stepped into a hidden island oasis.” We invite you to stroll through this amazing front garden, and then venture around back where a delightful surprise awaits!
