Ten ResidenceContemporary Patio, Los Angeles

The design intent for this modest home and garden, located on a tree-lined street in Culver City, was to create a family-friendly, versatile, sustainable outdoor environment that grew with the rapidly changing needs of the owners, their three children and their close-knit community. This became the site of the "Neighborhood Film Festival" where family and friends could settle into the oversized sofa, warm themselves by the outdoor firepit/coffee table, and enjoy a movie under the stars.

Please read the updated project description. However, to answer your question directly -- MTLA mounted a large retractable movie screen to the side of the garage.

This is so beautiful. Can you tell me if this was a custom water feature? Thanks!

Luna Bazaar (and others) carries lanterns like these for under $20. Each lantern can be lit with its own battery powered led (about $5). That's a good thing for people like me whose outdoor outlets are all being used. There are paper lanterns for indoor use and nylon lanterns for outdoor use. I have hung paper ones indoors directly in front of a covered window, and after a couple of years the colors are very faded, so I'm taking them down. However, I am considering the nylon lanterns for my patio and around the pool, strung on wire much like is done here. While I would love to use some beautiful colors (chartreuse and fuschia!) I think I will stick with the white lanterns. The TX sun is fierce, and the white looks great in MTLA's patio.

Thanks for the question. The fire pit/table was constructed with a gas line.

love the fire pit would have liked it more if it had been off centered - ie more room in the seating area for glasses

My favorite is strung paper lanterns. While paper isn’t an ideal choice for outdoors, you can find these in nylon and in a rainbow of colors and patterns. For maximum longevity, install them in a covered area.

Love the clean lines and ample seating and fun fountain. I really like the mix of warm wood and cool stone and then greenery. I like the offset concrete slab pathway and how it integrates with the fountain. Not a fan of the hanging lanterns, I like string cafe lights better.

3a. I like the concrete for fireplace and the wood is attached to the concrete.
