Brad and Geoff-this home is beautiful!! It's our inspiration home for our California home. Could you please clarify some confusion I'm having about the colors depicted in the above photo? Brad, you said the color of the siding changed from SW Tradewinds to SW Misty. Was this photo taken before or after you repainted the Hardy Plank SW Misty? Also, can you specify the stain color and brand used for your 5:1 ratio of stain/paint mix for your shingles? Such a fresh color scheme..Love It! Geoff...all I can say is, "Wow"! Wish I had a never ending bank account so I could hire you to come to California and redo my home:)

You had to paint the whole house after 5 years bc of sun fading the paint on the hardie board? Just wondering bc I am building an ocean front home and wanted a more unique color then traditional siding. Would you use hardie board again?

Sorry, I'm just now reading this question. Hardi is not the issue, as it has proven to be a very durable material for me over the past 15 years. The problem is paint fading in the bright sun we have on the coast in Florida. I have begun using lighter colors which do not break down as quickly in the UV radiation. The darker the color, the more quickly it deteriorates. I believe there are better paint products on the market today which will resist fading and chalking, but would not shy away from using Fiber cement siding products.

Lovely site, good workmanship. 'Design' appears to be a case of not knowing when to stop.

I believe these doors are by Designer Door. We also use Doorsmith out of Atlanta.

All exterior colors are Sherwin Williams. The original wall (Hardy Plank siding) color was Tradewinds (SW 6218) but we recently repainted the front porch and found it necessary to switch. After five years of sun, the color had faded to more of a blue-grey tone and the best match I could find was Misty (SW 6232).

The trim color is Oyster (SW7637. The garage door as well as the porch ceiling color is Moody Blue- SW 6221. Fot the shingle colors- we tried something new- mixed stain with paint (Rain- SW 6219) (using a 5 to 1 stain/paint mix) and dipped the shingles in this once or twice.

    What Houzz contributors are saying:

Mitchell Parker added this to Houzz Tour: Beach-Scene Colors for a Picturesque Florida GetawayMar 1, 2013

The awe-inspiring exterior has a signature galvanized roof and HardiePlank lap siding with red cedar shingles, all painted a custom soft blue color made to harmonize with all the materials. Gas lanterns, transom windows, exposed rafters on the top tower structure and a detailed railing with a recurring X pattern punctuate Watercolor's architectural style. The house faces a neighborhood park and backs up to the Point Washington State Forest, a huge natural preserve. The homeowners wanted the structure to connect to an above-garage apartment via an enclosed walkway so that they could walk from the front of the house to the back without having to go inside.
