Jonathan Kuhn Architect

We recently finished a custom house that was designed by Jonathan Kuhn. The house now stands prominent on Capitol Hill, in the historic district. It was such a pleasure working with Jon throughout the course of the project. He's very personable, professional and cares for those he works with. We look forward to the opportunity of working with him again in the near future.

We hired Jonathan in 2012-2013 as the architect for the total renovation/restoration (back to the studs rebuild) of our very old house in historic Takoma Park. He is the quintessential professional: responsive, measured, receptive, judicious, striking a wonderful balance in reading the owner's personal tastes and needs while also offering up great suggestions based on his clean, beautiful aesthetic and strong appreciation for functionality. In planning our home renovation, Jonathan recommended nuances and elements here and there that made all the difference in terms of introducing light and more space into our (130 year old) home while also respecting the history and original character of the structure. We were so impressed that I hired him about a year later in 2014-2015 to design my new office space in downtown DC. Again, he did a beautiful job, designing accent pieces for the lobby and conference room that made an otherwise nondescript 3600 SF office look modern, warm, rich and professional. I couldn't recommend Jonathan more highly, for either a residential or a corporate project.

I had the opportunity to work with Jonathan on two very challenging historic projects that were on the verge of demolition by neglect. Jonathan's expertise was crucial in bringing these historic single family homes back to life. His designs were sensitive to retaining the historic character and materials while also updating the homes to accommodate modern life (e.g., fitting half baths on the first floors of each). He also was sensitive to our budget. Jonathan was communicative and available throughout the design and construction process, and was available to troubleshoot when needed.

Jonathan Kuhn did the drawings for an addition that was completed on our house late last year. We needed another bedroom, bathroom and living space for our 1939 brick colonial in Woodside Park, near downtown Silver Spring. Other architects had claimed that our house was "tricky" and it would be difficult to figure out how to add the addition in a fitting way (this could be because our colonial is not typical, the stairs go down to the back of the house, rather than the front) that would maintain the house's flow. Jonathan drew a beautiful addition that, now realized, looks completely in keeping with the house, the neighborhood and gives us everything we need (walk-in closets, beautiful master bath, gorgeous airy and open family room, incredible deck) with no wasted spaces. We (including our three kids) could not be happier. Jonathan is also a dream to work with--always on time, creative, efficient and very personable.

We would recommend Jonathan Kuhn Architects to anyone--and in fact have to several friends and colleagues. Jonathan was the architect for the complete renovation of our row home in Washington, DC. There were several reasons that he made the project successful. First, his creativity in helping us imagine the possibilities for our house ensured that we maximized our space and personalized it to make it fit our needs. Second, his knowledge of the industry and the specifics of permitting and building process made him a trusted advisor throughout. Finally, his professionalism and pleasant manner made the entire process smooth and easy.

I have nothing but good things to say about Jonathan Kuhn. We hired him to design and supervise a renovation of our kitchen, in a New York City co-operative apartment. The talents that he brought to the job were all-encompassing and included his ability to deal with New York City laws and building rules and regulations, as well as to meld his own sense of beautiful design with the individual preferences of both my husband and me. His dealings with both the building staff and the Board were friendly and uncomplicated, and he was a perfectionist in his interactions with the contractor.

in 2013, Jonathan helped me with the planning, design, and permitting of a residential addition on my Bethesda MD home. It was nearly 1000 sq ft of living space and garage on a my mid-century modern homes in the National Historic Register neighborhood of Carderock Springs. Throughout the process he was responsive, creative, professional, and very organized and easy to deal with. Jonathan did a excellent job understanding and working within my budget constraints and architectural preferences to get a result that exceeded all expectations. His designs and drawings clear and well received by both the neighborhood architectural review board, the eventual builder (not to mention the county permitters). I have no reservations about highly recommending Jonathan for similar projects that others may be considering.
