Ed and team did a phenomenal work of art on our stairs! We chose a thick tread in white oak on open stairs and Ed was so helpful in making our desired look a reality. We just sold our house sadly, but I hope the new buyers admire it everyday like we did!

There are not many contractors, I discovered, that actually will update and/or replace stairs in homes. In Orange County I found two that could update my stairs in my 50-year-old house, and both quoted me basically the same base price. However, Design Hardwoods (also known as OC Stairs) went a step further and impressed me the most because, in addition to the base price, Ed Topalian, the owner of Design Hardwoods, spent the necessary time to explain what additional costs I could expect, and those costs were significant depending on the material I wanted and who I selected to finish the project. Ed went a step further by explaining the finishing work (paint, staining, etc.) would be done by others, and he also gave me the approximate cost of that service. He explained further that it would be my responsibility to contact my own choice of painter, or he could recommend one that he frequently used. Ed also let me know that he was booked three months out before he could start my project. Ed, however, was able to schedule me a month early and from start to finish this project took a week and a half to complete. In that amount of time, demolition was done and new stairs, handrail, etc. were installed by a team of totally efficient and organized men. They were on time, and steadily worked a full 8 hours, hardly taking time to eat. When the stairs were ready for finishing, a separate company came in. That team was equally as efficient, and I have to say Brent Koenemann of Koenemann Paint Enterprises, Inc. was not just a painter, but a true artist in every sense of the word!! He took the time to experiment with different stains, so I would get exactly what I envisioned for the stairs. He used the finest paint to compliment what was already in the room, and the result was an amazing stair project that turned out perfectly!! Brent was the "finisher" that Ed recommended, and both companies worked very well together in terms of scheduling time so one came in right after the other and were able to get this project done quickly. Let me first say that 5 STARS are not enough for the excellence we received in meeting with the owner of OC Stairs/Design Hardwoods, the design concept which was a collaborative effort, the construction, and detail shown in performing this job. We had our entire staircase rebuilt from top to bottom. Throughout the process, the personnel were impeccable, the workmanship was exceptional, the care they took to protect the rest of the house was as if they were in their own house. They came on time, finished and cleaned up, leaving our home as if they were not there. Our project also utilized coordination for staining and painting which was done seamlessly. If ever you need your stairs refreshed or they need other attention, do not hesitate to contact this company. The price is extremely reasonable and the end result is perfection.

My house was picked up for an HGTV show remodel and I changed my mind so many times on what I wanted for a banister/railing that I came into a time crunch for filming the show. I finally decided on what I wanted and I reached out to Ed at OC Stairs. Ed was super busy but came to see my banister/stair project the next day. I showed him pictures of what I wanted and let him know about my time constraints. Ed was amazing and willing to help. Ed and his team are the best. We've had a a few contractors at our home the last 2 years for upgrades. Both inside and outside and I would put Ed and his team at the top. The whole process was smooth, and the end result was the best. Called Ed, set up an appointment and my wife and I met him at his show room. We picked out the style and wood for our handrail, including the post and balusters. We scheduled our start date, and they were able to start earlier. Ed's team came out installed the handrail, the next day the rest of his team came out, stained and painted the handrail and post. The handrail matched the color of our hardwood floors, pretty impressive. They were professional and courteous, and made sure to clean up when they were done for the day. Ed Topalian and his crew created absolutely beautiful stairs for our new home. We have two curved staircases with wall caps, as well as wall caps at the landing and open areas of connecting hallways. Every step of the process, from our first meeting with Ed at his workshop to discuss design and materials, to the final day of installation was a breeze. We went from a 1983 wood staircase to a very modern, maple/oak banister and base (stained by experts to match our downstairs hardwood floor) with horizontal stainless-steel rods. Our staircase project involved a variety of vendors (electrician, drywaller, metal fabricator, stain finisher), all of which Ed recommended and we would use again (there is no way we could have brought all of these contractors together so seamlessly on our own). The wood hand railing and radius floor nosing that Ed created are perfect. The overall finished product is beautiful and it has changed the look & feel of our home. Ed and Ryan did an excellent job on my own home's new stair railing. As a designer, I am especially tuned into the details. Ed came through with flying colors! The new railing, post and wall caps are exactly how I envisioned them. This system wasn't easy either. We had a landing and step (with no post) which was a bit of a trip hazard. Ed figured out how to make the turn to incorporate the step. It now is a safer installation as well as beautiful. Thanks Ed!

Amazing craftsmanship! They really took the time to do not only structurally sound/sturdy work, but beautiful lines as well. Between the beautiful woodwork and then the gorgeous stain job that was done on the wood, I couldn't be more pleased with how it turned out! It went from 1990's country look to a clean, contemporary stairwell. When I decided to replace my flooring, it was recommended that I should also replace my staircase. When I met with Ed Topalian, I was immediately impressed by how professional he was. What an expert!!! He easily guided me through the process of selecting all aspects of my new staircase. When he came to take the measurements for my unit, he was very detailed and precise. He took his time and constantly asked me questions about the style and design of my project. It all paid off. When he sent his framer, he also took his time measuring in detail the entry area. When he returned several weeks later, he brought a number of boards. He quickly removed the old staircase and began the new project. It was amazing. He literally put the pieces together like a puzzle and I had the frame completed in one day. The next step brought the finish carpenter. He also placed each tread and rail like a well planned puzzle. Finally, the person that came to stain my stairs came and helped me select the perfect colors. Each professional not only did a wonderful job, they also were thoughtful in the process and left me no mess to clean or concerns that I got less than a perfect job done. I cannot thank Ed and his crew enough for my beautiful staircase. I felt very fortunate to have found such honest and professional craftsmen. What started out as a daunting task became a great success due to people who cared about the quality of their work with the expertise to make me a very happy client.

Ed and his team at OC stairs did a remodel on the staircase of our 1980s custom home and it turned out great! I would highly recommend! Ed was quick to schedule a time to meet, and was very responsive to questions throughout the up-front design and quoting process. I am so happy I chose OC Stairs/ Design Hardwoods to install my new stairs. My finished stairs are absolutely beautiful and his team were amazing professionals. I have had a lot of remodeling work done in my home and the installation of my stairs went flawlessly and they turned out exactly as I had requested. The painter they contract with is superb also. My stairs are now four years old and they look like the day they were installed. If you are looking to install new/replacement stairs OC Stairs is first rate.

OC Stairs installed a custom steel-rod stair railing with wood posts and top rails. Our experience with them was top notch - there were no "surprise" hidden charges, they showed up on time, they finished the project within their stated time frame, and the work they did was superior. We are very picky - my husband is an architect and we are always looking at new home developments so we are "seasoned critics" when it comes to analyzing the quality of work in these homes and OC Stairs surpassed our expectations. From start to finish OC Stair Company did an incredible job rebuilding our stairs. We had original iron banisters with carpet and were adding all engineered flooring to our home. I had already hired a flooring company to install the floors so needed the stairs done to match the flooring. If I had found OC Stairs prior to hiring the flooring company I would have had OC Stairs do the flooring as well. They are professional, we’re extremely helpful in the planning process, arrived when they said they would and completed the job on time. We are enjoying our new stairs and highly recommend OC Stairs.

Very happy with my custom stairs by OC Stairs! They are beautiful, easy to maintain and updated the look of our home. You will likely only do the stairs once, so get the stairs you want! I am glad I did!

OC Stairs/Design Hardwoods installed new stair rails, posts, balusters, and skirting in our stairway. They were very professional and detail oriented. They shimmed things as needed to keep lines straight and uniform rather than just nailing and caulking as many others would. The actual treads and risers were later carpeted and the end result looks great. OC Stairs did a fantastic job and the rails are all very sturdy with no wobble. I would recommend them without hesitation.

I came to OC Stairs in a bind as my contractor was stalling the start of a stair project in a total renovation of my house. It was a very difficult project few people were capable of doing. I was so impressed with Ed that I signed a contract the next day; the smartest decision I could have made. The job went perfectly and I enjoyed working with him and his crew. He also introduced me to a couple subs he works with for flooring and trim. They were professional, always on time and very good at their trade as was Ed's crew. I have used OC Stairs/Design Hardwoods on new stair cases in two homes. They are true master craftsman with their work on everything from the treads, baluster, and handrails. They are amazing in design as they figure out what works best for you and for your house. Their fabrication and installation are the best in the business. I hope we are in our forever house but if I ever needed a new or updated staircase they would be my only call.

Ed Topalian at OC Stairs/Design Hardwoods is absolutely AMAZING! We live in Torrance and Ed was so kind to make an exception to even consider servicing us even though we're outside his service territory. You won't find a more professional, knowledgeable, and honest person than Ed for stairs. I was beyond disappointed that we weren't able to use Ed and his team because it turns out that our stairs are not up to code and we would also need a structural engineer to remove this metal pole, which would be too costly for us. Ed was always available for questions and quick to reply. Talking to Ed, I could already tell that they use the best processes and milling. I cannot recommend this place enough!

Ed and his team are awesome!! I couldn’t say enough good things about them. Of all the contractors we hired for our home remodel they were the absolute best by a mile. Highly professional and experts at what they do. They gave great advice and were upfront about what they can and can’t do. Didn’t try any games that can be typical of some contractors. I made changes part way through our project and Ed could easily have used the opportunity to rip me off but instead he was very honest and fair. We lived in our home through the stair remodel and Ed and his team made it safe for our young kids to be in the home. In the end, I have an awesome staircase and had a great experience with them. If I ever need to build or rebuild a staircase, I’m making one phone call and it will be to Ed.

OC Stairs completed the rebuild of a curved stairs for me recently. OC Stairs' pricing is on the high side amongst the vendors invited to bid. OC Stairs' years of experience and the quality of past completed projects are the main factors that influenced the decision my wife and I made. The result proves that the decision is a right one. Given the number of projects OC Stairs had completed, Ed, the owner, is very knowledgeable which makes the project a smooth sailing. What impressed me the most, and even more important than the quality of work, is Ed's flexibility in accommodating other remodeling projects that occurred at the property. Five stars for sure. The original spiral staircase was 30 years old and very tired. Ed Topalian met at my home, went over options and gave me a detailed bid. Because I had other construction going on outside at the same time, he was very flexible with the start date. The demo/rebuild took 4 days with another 2-3 days for painting by a different contractor who was referred by Design Hardwoods (also great). The installers were clearly very experienced professionals who showed up on time, worked hard and cleaned up every day. I'm still in the process of selecting the carpet that will finish the project. Can't say enough about OC Stairs/Design Hardwoods. We just got done with the majority of renovating our new house when an unexpected joy decided to bless our family. Ed was able to translate my ideas into a beautiful new stair system that conveys the modern but warm look that I am striving for through this remodel. We just got our staircase refinished by Design Hardwood and are very pleased. We are very happy we cam across Ed, he is one of the best people we have found to work with and felt he was very honest. The existing interior railings were fairly standard with simple powder-coated balusters. We imagined replacing the balusters with 1" acrylic dowels which we thought sounded easier than it ended up being! This was the first acrylic application Design Hardwoods had worked on - Ed didn't hesitate and set to work. He and his guys created a prototype testing different adhesives, making additional house visits to ensure that the job would be done right. Installation day arrived and everyone on board worked efficiently, with precision and the end result turned out beautifully. I was referred to Design Hardwoods by a friend whose company had worked with them on more than one occasion. I was interested in a make over on a set of open riser stairs in my split level home. I took photos of the existing stairs and visited their showroom. I met with the owner who suggested ideas he had and we reviewed several photos of the options available. We then set an appointment to meet at my house so Ed could do exact measurements and write up an estimate for a couple of different designs. I had wanted to use the existing look of open risers but was convinced by Ed that a closed staircase would provide a better look and make the room cozier. We moved forward and the work began in short order. The result was amazing and I am now thinking of having the stairs off our entryway redone as well. I would not even think of having a different company perform any additional work. All time frames were met and the job was actually completed a day or two early.
