10 Interior Lighting Trends for 2024
Statement chains, modern-meets-traditional designs and warm metals were bright spots at the fall 2023 High Point Market
If lighting is jewelry for the home, then the furnishings industry’s High Point Market in North Carolina could give Tiffany & Co. a run for its money. At the recent fall market (Oct. 14-18), lighting showrooms were dripping with dazzling looks — some classic, some cutting-edge and many a marriage of the two with a combination of new technology and traditional forms. Here are some of the interior lighting trends that designers, buyers and the media checked out in showrooms — and that you can look forward to finding at retail now and in 2024.
Lanterns. Likewise, integral LEDs turned the ancient lantern into a modern, sculptural fixture that stood out in showrooms this season, as illustrated by this LED-lined Tournu pendant from Hudson Valley Lighting. It’s seen here in aged brass, but it’s also available in a matte white acrylic finish.

The Luella lantern from Regina Andrew’s Southern Living collection riffs on the traditional style by giving it a trending textured white finish with blackened natural brass candelabra lighting on the interior.

Banker’s lights. Vermont-based Hubbardton Forge reimagined the old-school banker’s light with its Pulse table lamp. Instead of hiding a tube-shaped incandescent bulb behind a green shade, this new hand-forged steel version showcases a dimmable frosted LED encased in clear ribbed glass.
2. Chunky Chains
Chains are a traditional detail that designers gave a modern twist this season, primarily by playing with scale. The Nessa by Corbett Lighting, which is available in two sizes, suspends a seeded glass orb on an oversize brass chain.

Varaluz’s Tilde ceramic table lamp combines textures, adding a plaster-like white matte band to a smooth orange quartz glaze.
4. Woven and Beaded Construction
Another familiar trend this fall was woven and beaded lighting made from wood, grasses and other plant-based materials. Hinkley Lighting’s large Dalia pendant has an oversize dome made of wood beads.

Laura Kirar used rope made from a fast-growing weed called lampakanay to create the Mar floor lamp and pendant chandelier in her newest collection for Arteriors.

The fun, tree-like look of the Mar floor lamp, which has a woven base as well as a woven shade, was a trend-within-a-trend that popped up in multiple showrooms this season. Here’s another example: the Big Island floor lamp from Jamie Young.
5. Novel Naturals
Eggshells. Over the last few years, we’ve become used to seeing lighting made of natural materials like wood, grasses and ceramic in their raw, rustic-looking state. But as the trend evolves, we’re seeing those materials in refined, fresh-looking ways, with the materials themselves sometimes given a novel look.
Perhaps the most surprising was this Arteriors Ayana chandelier, whose crackled “petals” are ivory resin composite composed of actual eggshells.

Leather. Leather details (especially belt-like iterations) as well as leather-clad designs again abounded in showrooms. Among the most compelling was this three-tier chandelier from Kalco Lighting’s Pelt collection. The chains may look like little copper coins, but they’re actually stitched-together leather rounds with a weighted golden drop at the bottom.
Statement stone. Dramatic stone of all kinds remains on-trend, with warm and earthy travertine and bold, colorful marble increasingly edging out cool gray and white Carrara.
One of the more subtly colored but striking natural stones that caught our eye this fall was lilac marble, which is paired in this Zen table lamp by Hubbardton Forge with a slick-looking hand-forged steel shade.

Metal. Gold tones continue to dominate the metallics in lighting showrooms. In keeping with the general warming trend of furnishings, we noticed a lot of burnished, low-shine bronze and aged brass, as exemplified by this Becki Owens for Hudson Valley Lighting Kamay table lamp.

Ceramic. Handmade — or handmade-looking — ceramic bases are staples refreshed each season to reflect trending palettes. This fall that meant a lot of blue, green and terra-cotta fixtures, including this Colorado table lamp from Surya.
6. Semiflush and Flush Mounts
We’ve been noticing a lot of small flush mounts where designers might have once put can lights in the residential interior design projects uploaded to Houzz. Not so coincidentally, those fixtures — and their close cousins, semiflush mounts — seem to be getting renewed attention from manufacturers. This assortment from Arteriors illustrates just how chic these lighting staples are getting.

The newest flush and semiflush fixtures were not all tiny: We saw a lot of stunning larger designs that would be ideal for interiors with low ceilings, such as this gold leaf and craquele crystal Vittoria semiflush from Corbett Lighting.

7. Cordless Cuties
Rechargeable LED lights make up a growing category of lighting. We saw only a smattering of them at the market — but more than we saw last season. Some come with a charging cord and USB adapter integrated into the fixture, whereas others sit on a charging base. An example of the latter is Zafferano America’s Poldina Pro Lido light, pictured here, which has a ceramic shade handmade in Italy. The little lamps stay illuminated for more than nine hours and can be used outdoors as well.

Another example is Koncept’s adorable Guy battery-powered LED lantern, which has a variety of optional accessories, including a felt collar and a glass disk. We admired it at ICFF this past spring and were happy to see that it had officially launched.
On the more elegant end of the spectrum, Visual Comfort launched a slew of rechargeable options in luxe materials.

Colorful. Although there were plenty of colored glass shades in lighting showrooms, Kalco’s geometric Chroma collection took the cake. Pink, green, blue and orange metallic-like hues can be seen in its dichroic, iridescent glass, which is held by brass arms branching off a ribbed stem and white marble base.
We weren’t the only heads turned by the punchy fixture — it was selected by Andmore’s TrendWatch program to feature in its Brights & White display.

9. Indirect Lighting
The Griffith two-tier chandelier from Arteriors has bronze plates that face upward, directing the light to the ceiling. The reflected light then creates a warm, even glow. The so-called indirect lighting — though, again, not a new invention — was popular this season both in chandeliers and sconces.

10. Adjustable Temps
We’ve already mentioned how LEDs are revolutionizing lighting, allowing for slimmer, barely there fixtures in shapes limited only by the imagination. But LEDs are also exciting for their function. Tunable LED lights — which allow users to adjust the color warmth of the light, not just the brightness — are a growing trend in interiors.
Koncept’s newest Z-bar Gen 4 LED desk lamp, for example, allows users to switch between warm and cool white light depending on the setting and task.

On the opposite end of the drama scale, Schonbek’s customizable crystal Infinity chandelier allows users to shift from warm to cool LED or incandescent illumination with a combination of socket-based bulbs, integrated LED and a programmable LED system, according to the manufacturer. It also has colored LEDs in case the mood calls for purple, red, white or blue light shining through tiers of crystals.
Expect to see more tunable LEDs for residential settings in 2024 and beyond.

Ring chandeliers. In our coverage of the furniture trends at the fall 2023 market, we mentioned that contemporary spins on traditional designs continued to be important across furnishings categories, and lighting is no different — especially thanks to integral LEDs, which have an ultrathin profile and low heat output.
Take the classic ring chandelier, which seemed to be the darling of the lighting world this season. Many designers streamlined them by swapping candelabra-style lights for integral LEDs that virtually disappear within the fixture, such as in this antique-brass-finished Empire chandelier designed by Laura Kirar for Arteriors.
