In my experience, I have found that communication is essential for a successful project. I love it when couples are both involved in initial consultations. I ask both to provide separate emails so I can summarize important project points. I also encourage feed-back from both, including the hubby. I have found this to be very effective. I really enjoy couples shopping trips it helps to pin point styles and where to shop!

Ms. Kathleen Peterson, I do agree that it is important to distinguish an interior designer from an interior stylist or decorator. In fact I explicitly state those differences in my contract with clients. But it is equally important for those in either category not to speak down on, or develop an elitist view of the profession of the other. Considering the foregoing, employing the services of an interior stylist/decorator/stager does not, in an of itself merit the "buyer beware" slogan that you've cited. Those in BOTH professions work very hard to provide a beautiful product for their clients at the end of the creative process. I respect that.

I love this article and I agree, in our industry, there has been far too much mystery and divide. It is much easier to be kind and supportive of one another. I think it is essential to inform each client of your expertise and your education as well as anything that you do not feel comfortable doing or do not that you are as capable of doing. Regardless of education, there is always something that you may not be as good at. Don't be afraid to let the client know. Trust in our relationship is first and foremost with our clients. I believe we can help one another more by not treating a decorator as less than a designer, education does not always equal better work nor does it guarantee a good job. Inform your clients of the difference just as this article was written expressly on the job of decorators and I think it was very informative.
