We have a lawn free front and side yard. We have a walkway that goes through a garden of hydrangeas, lilies, ferns, japanese maples, hemlocks, oaks, foxgloves, hastas, etc. It can get overgrown very quickly, but it sure is serene (and shady). We are designing our backyard so we won't have to mow but so that we can entertain. Gravel looks good to me.

Any time yards can be rid of turf is a good time.
