I’ve learned a lot reading all your comments. My 30-year-old kitchen needs some minor adjustments, and I’m trying to figure a way to add a drop-in gas range to replace my 4 cooktops and oven which is not a standard size oven. These appliances are all in my 9’4” island that is on two levels. I’d like to keep the size of the island and also keep the appliances located there. Over 22 years, I have found I love the set-up with the cooktops and small prep sink in the lower section, and a higher wide bar area for safety, for entertaining, and for hiding the mess from the great room. I have been unable to get guests to use the great room, dining room, and large foyer for socializing because they always insist they want to hang around the island! My problem is that I don’t want to completely remodel my kitchen, particularly I don’t want to replace all my countertops because they are in excellent condition. I will add that I need to replace my main sink opposite the island under a window, and have been told it will be difficult if not impossible to get it out without damaging the counters. I have loved my downdraft ventilation for those who are considering it. It all comes apart, and I load it in the dishwasher. I attached some pictures.

I know you don't want to replace your countertops....but if they are 30 years old how much longer will it look good? Consider granite. You obviously use your kitchen a lot. You will be able to put hot pans directly on granite. Also, you could use a different countertop on the perimeter countertops than on the island. Perhaps granite on the work areas and a butcher block on the raised level on the island. All depends on what look you are going for.

I had a kitchen with a granite island and corian counters on the perimeter. Now I have quartz and love it far more than either of those surfaces.
