    Yes, I believe you would be able to apply this planting scheme to your shady location in Kentucky. In regards to a shrub alternative to the Ligularia, you may want to consider a Hydrangea or a Rhododendron. Good luck!

    it's pachysandra, and it doesn't take over like ivy and some of the other ground covers do... I love it in my yard, have had it in one place for about 9 years and it hasn't wandered far.. it's lived through drought and a few unusually cold winters for the south here-zone 7 (actually got below 0 a couple of times) and it's still going strong.
