We took this entire wall and used it as a canvas to lay out the design of the floating shelves, stone, and window casings.
Our design takes into account the exact placement and sizing of each aspect and the use of negative space on the wall.

This home, located in the rolling scrub oak foothills of the Rocky Mountains, has its roots based in traditional Japanese architecture. Modified and adapted for the owner’s lifestyle, its influences draw upon the great traditions of Japanese woodwork and joinery.
The central main space of the home has a wide open floor plan. This space and others in the house can be easily adapted, however, to provide a more intimate environment through the use of 85 shoji doors located throughout the home. The use of shoji at the transom areas help diffuse both artificial and natural light throughout the space creating a light and inviting feel any time of day or night.
One unique feature is the stream that flows through the main space. Created with the use of indigenous rocks from the site and around Colorado, the stream provides a soothing background noise that permeates the entire residence. In Colorado’s arid climate, the additional humidity the stream adds to the home is another benefit.
Probably the most notable aspect of the residence is the woodwork. Traditional Japanese woodwork often utilizes Yellow Cedar in its design, however due to its scarcity and limited availability locally, Clear Vertical Grain Fir (CVGF) was chosen and a viable substitute. All of the woodwork was designed and created locally in house. Much thought and care when into creating a look and feel of traditional Japanese joinery and woodwork. Of course, truly replicating the actual techniques was not feasible or practical for the entire residence but in a few areas we were very fortunate to be able to apply some very traditional methods and tools to the process.
The entire project was a wonderful experience to be a part of. The research and techniques we discovered along the way continue to valuable lessons and guide us in our continuing projects.

The soft green opalescent tile in the shower and on the floor creates a subtle tactile geometry, in harmony with the matte white paint used on the wall and ceiling; semi gloss is used on the trim for additional subtle contrast. The sink has clean simple lines while providing much-needed accessible storage space. A clear frameless shower enclosure allows unobstructed views of the space.

“Just as described, there is an edgy, irreverent vibe here, but the result has an appropriate stature and seriousness. Love the overscale windows. And the outdoor spaces are so great.”
Situated atop an old Civil War battle site, this new residence was conceived for a couple with southern values and a rock-and-roll attitude. The project consists of a house, a pool with a pool house and a renovated music studio. A marriage of modern and traditional design, this project used a combination of California redwood siding, stone and a slate roof with flat-seam lead overhangs. Intimate and well planned, there is no space wasted in this home. The execution of the detail work, such as handmade railings, metal awnings and custom windows jambs, made this project mesmerizing.
Cues from the client and how they use their space helped inspire and develop the initial floor plan, making it live at a human scale but with dramatic elements. Their varying taste then inspired the theme of traditional with an edge. The lines and rhythm of the house were simplified, and then complemented with some key details that made the house a juxtaposition of styles.
The wood Ultimate Casement windows were all standard sizes. However, there was a desire to make the windows have a “deep pocket” look to create a break in the facade and add a dramatic shadow line. Marvin was able to customize the jambs by extruding them to the exterior. They added a very thin exterior profile, which negated the need for exterior casing. The same detail was in the stone veneers and walls, as well as the horizontal siding walls, with no need for any modification. This resulted in a very sleek look.

The unique aspects of this rustic staircase incorporate elements of wood, stone, and steel. Holding a unique style, the steel beam provides support while also tying in the stairwell guardrail. Displaying a large slab as the initial step up, this stairwell carries the stonework all the way up to the ceiling.

This pool has four different levels with the spa being the high point of the project 30" above finish floor of the house, level two is the glass tile wet deck just below spa spillway, level 3 is the main pool, level four is the lower trough which is at rear patio level. Homes that do not have the proper slopes for vanishing edges, can reverse the topo and create the negative edge that faces the house for a dramatic view, and create wonderful flows of water running towards the house and create incredible views

This was my favorite aspect of the redesign. We took several negatives and turned them into incredible, showcase features. For example, the current basement has 8 foot high ceilings and is used primarily for storage. Our plan lowers it 4 feet, allowing for an enormous car and art gallery. The walls of the pool are acrylic letting in light and turning this area into a coveted place to entertain. The reflecting pool is approximately 150 feet long and invites people from the house into the yard to enjoy the gardens and the views. There are several unusable acres of hillside. Our plan calls for those to be planted with wine producing grapes with a wine cellar and caves built into the hillside.

Expansive floor to ceiling windows bring the outdoors in to this newly remodeled living room in Huntington Woods. The lofty stepped ceiling is up lit for an indirect light source that defines and heightens the space. A textured dimensional tile wall surrounds the linear fireplace. Natural light floods into the space from the corner window. The thoughtful design of the large, open floor plan balances a sense of expansiveness with cozy intimacy. Proper use of negative space ensures the room feels comfortable without feeling oversized. Large walls are proportioned to perfectly showcase favorite selections from the homeowner's collection of vintage French and Italian art posters by artists Jean d'Ylen and Leonetto Cappiello. A built-in dining buffet with floating cabinets and shelves is recessed into the central support wall. The shelves are backlit with LED track lighting to illuminate a collection of contemporary white pottery pieces, punctuated occasionally with cheerful bursts of bold color. Additional lighting under the cabinets accentuates the ethereal vibe, while the richly stained wood finish complements the walnut floors. A neutral palette provides a blank canvas on which to showcase the rich textures of the striated rug and soft furnishings. Bold strokes of color in the plush pillows and larger than life art posters are the crowning touches that inject a fun sense of personality into this stunning 2018 project.

The clients had built a magnificent Italianate 'villa' with spectacular views of the Santa Barbara coastline. They had assembled an impressive array of garden objects from around the world which were to be incorporated into the gardens. But the challenges were numerous.
Object scale had to carefully managed in this 40 foot by 80 foot space -- The statuary, hardscape elements, and fountains were carefully separated throughout the landscape, in order to de-emphasize the disparate sizes. Objects included a six-foot high Buddha, a 12" high prayer bell, and a massive 1,500 pound stone urn. Additionally, spectacular tree specimens were chosen and carefully placed to provide a counterweight to the other objects in the garden.
