This is quite a different room from before. It exudes comfort with lots of luxe finishes. Floor to ceiling custom silk draperies behind the upholstered bed create drama and accent the height of the room. We kept the same color palette with new furnishings - sleek and glamorous nightstands with a matching triple dresser, a subtle men's wear inspired herringbone fabric on the settee, with a muted abstract patterned rug. When you live in a small house, a trick to making it feel bigger is to bring attention to the transitional areas such as this stair case. Simply dressing it up with a runner, wainscoting, artwork and colorful walls makes you experience the space as part of the square footage of your house every time you use it. The tromp l'oiel mural at the top of the stairs, painted by Wendy Chapin of Silver Spring, MD, suggests even more space. She created a "window" for me that leads the eye to a vast valley beyond. The cutout figure she copied from a Vermeer painting invites the viewer to come upstairs. What fun!

Everyone loves swivel chairs. These leather barrel style chairs have a retro design that would fit in a traditional home as well as contemporary. The club room mood is enhanced with the vintage framed photographs of college football teams.

Chairs facing each other provide an intimate seating area at the foot of the bed. The large scale artwork "Don Quixote" by Zaza Khabuliani, provides a inspiring and whimsical touch to the room. And the handmade paper artwork, " Adventure of Courage",by Jeanne Petrosky above the cream painted chests adds a pop of color and another layer of subtle texture to the room. A symmetrical seating area using two striking black leather chairs places the focus on the burl wood and black painted Chinoiserie cabinet and the oil painting of the dancers above. Good reading light is provided by the gold finished bamboo stem floor lamps. The royal blue patterned rug and blue velvet pillows are an exciting bit of color with the other neutral furnishings.

To keep the windows as open as possible the draperies were magically pulled back using the Italian stringing method. Small details make a big difference -the rust silk cornices are pleated to add texture and the color is accented in the button detail and top edge piping on the pleated linen drapery. The subtle diamond weave in the silk sheers has the added embellishment of white faux pearls. The soft light from the contemporary chandelier adds to the cozy factor for this room.
