Isn't against code to not have a rail on the deck?

These are "natural" Western Red Cedar Shingles.

While we are talking organic ... rocks, like shells, are a textural and tactile marvel. I heard of a family who collected rocks on their vacations and wrote the date and place where they were found in permanent marker on them. Then they integrated the stones into the chimney of their house when it was being built. Rocks can also be made into stunning lamps — but more on that in another story.

Lake House Rule No. 2: Leave no stone unturned, unstacked, or, oh you know what I mean. A fieldstone fireplace is the best kind of lake house fireplace. I love the organic shape of this one next to all of the clean contemporary lines of the house.
