During a 30-year design career, I worked with many contractors in the U.S. and in Europe, and Southfen is one of the very best. David Sutphen’s innate artistic ability, coupled with his skills as a fine furniture maker and architectural designer, have given him an eye for detail and an appreciation of craft. Both are in evidence in Southfen’s work. Over the past decade, they’ve completed several projects for me, and each one was approached with professionalism and a can-do attitude. The process was an open and collaborative one, which allowed each person’s expertise to play a part, resulting in the best possible outcome. The Southfen crew has a vast knowledge of building methods and materials, so the projects moved forward at an efficient pace, and didn’t require oversight. They had good sources for everything I needed, and were happy to work with any new products I threw into the mix. Communications, which can so often be a frustration, were handled with astonishing speed, and their workmanship was meticulous. On top of all this, they are a polite, fun and accommodating group, and you’ll be happy to see them each morning.

dIn 2012, we purchased a house that Southfen had built in 2000. There were a number of modifications that we wanted to make, including installing a new front door, completely changing an office into a german style bavarian room with coffered ceiling and paneled walls, built-in an new divider from the living room and building complete basement recreation and and exercise rooms. All of this was handled in a timely and professional manor. In 2015 we wanted to have a German Ceramic tile stove installed, which required changing an outside wall and building a chimney. The projects was professionally done and came in on time and on budget. We are extremely happy with Southfen and highly recommend them to others.

My husband and I were very pleased with the work of Southfen for our new kitchen project. All employees were very professional, very knowledgeable, communicated well with us and left their work area cleaned up at the end of each day. The job was completed a few days early as well which was much appreciated! David Sutphen did the architectural drawings and we were very happy with the final outcome. David and his team at Southfen did an exceptional job helping us complete the partial renovation of our 100 year old barn. David was particularly strong helping to figure out the design of the post and beam system we needed so that the end product was consistent with the look and feel of our old home. The carpenters at Southfen are also top notch. I have done many projects myself over the years and have very high standards - my wife would lovingly say impossible standards - and I was thoroughly impressed with their work. Communication from start to finish was also excellent.

David Sutphen, the owner of Southfen, is the consummate professional for your home restoration. My wife and I had ideas, and David ran with them, making them work utilizing his years of restoration experience. When we came up with ideas along the way that changed the scope of the project, David walked us through the ramifications of the changes (design/cost/impact on project completion). The result is that a a very "chopped-up" early 70's home metamorphed into an extremely functional more open design. Not only do we enjoy our restored house much more than before, but we now feel we have a home that will be easy to resell. We have recommended David to others, who have called to thank us after the work was completed. You cannot go wrong with Southfen.

I cannot speak highly enough of Dave Sutphen. Ten years after we built our house we were ready for a significant expansion / renovation. We had an architect help with plans for years but there was just something missing. We met with Dave to bid the plans. We told him the look we were seeking and he agreed that the plans didn't get us there. He redesigned the whole thing and we were thrilled with the plan. The only thing better than the plan was the end result. The craftsmanship of his crew is unsurpassed. They are not carpenters they are craftsmen. His subcontractors perform at the same level. Every detail was perfect. I can't tell you how much pleasure I have derived on almost a daily basis enjoying my home because the craftsmanship is so superb. We have had Southfen back on many occasion for maintenance, repair or other small projects and we are always thrilled with the result. If I could give them 100 stars I would. 5 isn't enough.

Southfen is a great company to work with. David Sutphen is a gifted designer and builder with a genuine appreciation for older and historic properties. His team delivers very high quality workmanship. They are neat, friendly, and collaborative. We are finishing up our second project with Southfen. The first was a total restoration of a 3 bedroom, 2 bath cottage. We are currently finishing a major kitchen-family room renovation in our home. Southfen's attention to detail and commitment to complement existing older components make them a perfect partner.

We have the only the highest praise for Southfen Restoration. We did a large project with them of a complete restoration to an old stone house. The project included adding an addition to the existing structure and the design work was perfect in fitting with the old house. The company does meticulous work and every member of the team is knowledgeable and courteous and the project was complete in the time originally specified. It was a most enjoyable experience.. We have had Southfen return for a number of projects over the years and each time we have had the same excellent results.

We chose Southfen to complete our multi-phased project. David Sutphen walked us through the concept and planning to the construction and design portions of each phase. His knowledge of and experience with unique materials helped us create a beautiful solution to several problems we had been having. Southfen coordinated the delivery of products and the scheduling of contractors and vendors to produce an efficient timeline. The staff have been working in our home, while we have been in our home, at work. They've been polite, generous, patient and respectful. They've also been fun to have around. The beautiful new space we have now reflects their skilled handiwork. As we get ready to begin the next phase of this project, new windows and cedar siding, we can say, already, that we are very happy we chose Southfen.

Southfen restoration has done 2 successful projects for us. First they remodeled 2 bathrooms. We were very pleased with all the workers, including the subcontractors and ended up With 2 updated bathrooms. Second, they helped us design and build a screened-in porch, including a beautiful fireplace. We could not be happier with Southfen and would highly recommend them.

Southfen was amazing! They always arrived on time and worked quickly. We had structural walls taken down and barn beams put in their place.
