yeah, they're edible. spicy, crunchy. there's an old-fashioned variety called rat-tail radish that is grown exclusively for its large, edible seed-pods.

Thanks I'll-man. I just picked four of the pods and ate them. You're right; they were very good, and quite unique. We've decided to leave the plants and pick the pods to put in salads. Another cool discovery....

Never saw anything like it before. I don't think I planted any radish except red but wonder if these came from one of the mesclun mixes.

I have the kind you show and some that are less pointy on a diff. plant.

nope. I planted a mesclun mix and some HD radish seeds there and they were red.

Yo Tom...good to KNOW! We just ate the last 3 of our icicles yesterday with dinner. Glad you posted because I wanted to know how these guys do in summer heat...I was going to put down more seeds. Will have to leave some to get the spicy beans too!

Hi Cindee, I would not start them now, it's getting too hot, you'll need to wait until fall. These plants were just left over from January because I planted too many, it may be that these established plants will make it through the summer but I seriously doubt it.

they tend to get scale in the summer. but the rat-tail is supposedly one of the crops you could, if you wanted, grow over the summer here in FLA. i think castorp tried it out. maybe he'll chime in.

all (or at elast all the ones i grow) Brassicaceae put out those little pods. i grow apollo arugula, which is a brassica. (not all arugulas are brassicas.) it, too, puts out the pods after flowering, but very late and slow. this year, i finally had the patience to let it got completely to seed. the pods looked just like radish seed pods, and tasted just like 'em, too. i let them dry and saved them for next year... now, i got thousands of arugula seeds!
