My grandmothers both lived in storybook kind of houses. One lived in Memphis in a Victorian with immensely high ceilings and huge windows. It has a big L shaped front porch. And transoms over the doors. There is an oval shaped window in the "front hall". And those old fireplaces that must have been for coal or something. The other lived in Skaneateles NY in a storybook cottage. Somehow it too has a L shaped porch. There was a wood burning stove in the kitchen and a claw foot tub that seemed immense. It is on a tree lined street and had a coal chute in the basement. My grandfather grew strawberries in the back and my grandmother made them into jam in those jam glasses with paraffin on the top. There was a big enamel top table with a drawer where she kept silverware. Why don't more tables have drawers? It just seems so practical and a use of unused space. It was the olden days, I guess. There was a stuffed owl on top of the china cabinet in the dining room that I thought was looking at me and I would run to get through that room. I googled her address and found that the house is for sale. I have not been in the house for many years and really enjoyed looking at the photos. Despite changes, much of the house remains unchanged. A real blast from the past.

Your cabinets look like they are in good shape, so "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"! Due to the present finish on the cabinets, I would not recommend painting them yourselves. (When cabinets are manufactured, they are painted in a very controlled atmosphere, free of dust. You might be surprised just how difficult it is to get a finish you will be happy with, particularly if the present ones have any coating. If you REALLY want to have different cabinets, look into pricing on resurfacing your present ones professionally. You could do some stenciling on the area above the cabinets, if you want to get some relief from all the wood. Or mount your collectables, if you have any. The floor looks like it could use some help. There is linoleum available in all kinds of patterns and colors, and it is a "sustainable" or "green" product and retro, if you like that idea. Tiles are also great, but you will run into greater expense with installation, as another commenter stated, and it really is best to pay someone to do it who has all the tools and expertise. Depending on the condition of the floor, linoleum tiles can be laid over the existing one. I would stay light but warm, because of the color of the cabinets, and I'd stay away from wood and wood laminate, because you already have so much wood in your kitchen. I don't know where you live, but there is a code that dictates how high above the stove top your range hood must be. I agree it's irritating to have one that is too low. You can remove the cabinets above, put in a microwave/exhaust (as someone else suggested) or put in a shorter cabinet and place your hood below.

I'm not exactly Martha Stewart, but ONE time, I got inspired when I found a perfect goose feather. It reminded me of the movie - "The Joy Luck Club", so I HAD to use it! I made this nautical themed gift wrap for my friend, who lives at the beach. I made the anchor wrapping paper in MS Word by downloading a GIF image of an anchor, and repeating it across the page. Then I attached pine twigs that I clipped from a nearby tree and made the gift tags from cardboard. Brown paper packages tied up in string - these are a few of my favorite things. She LOVED it so much, she took photos and showed everyone. Even her crafty daughter was impressed! She kept the goose feather - it's hanging in her home :-)
