Variegated Bird of Paradise

A nursery owner down in San Diego who had a variegated Bird of Paradise plant was kind enough to give me about 10 seeds from one of the flower stalks. He (and others) warned me that the seeds were very unlikely to produce variegated plants. He had tried hundreds of seeds and only one variegated plant was all he had for his efforts.

Well against all odds, one of the seeds he gave me produced a variegated seedling. Its one of those plants that I always wanted, but never thought I would get. You just don't see them for sale anywhere.

Congratulations!! Being that variegated as an emerging seedling should result in a breathtaking adult. I have a mature variegated White Bird of Paradise but it hasn't produced any blooms yet.

Congrats is right..you really lucked out..I'd call the nursery and thank them over and over, plus tell them about your good fortune..I'd love finding a variegated plant, but that's impossible..Toni

I did e-mail him a thank you note and a photo. At the time he gave me the seeds, I bought over $150.00 worth of variegated St. Augustine grass plugs from him so it wasn't like I was just browsing at the nursery and not really buying anything. It was very generous of him to give me a seed head from his variegated BOP.

The variegated St. Augustine grass plugs are filling in nicely. I should have a variegated lawn in my front yard sometime this summer. Here's a photo of a plug.

Cagary, very nice..I think a variegated garden would look fantastic..How tall does the St. Augustine grass grow? Is it an ornamental grass that grows tall? Thanks, Toni

How long did it take your seeds to sprout? did you use the baggie method?

The seeds sprouted in a couple of weeks. I used the baggie method with bottom heat.

Does anyone know where I could find a cutting of a variegated BOP ? It seems My boyfriend has a taste for hard to find plants. This is such a cool plant. Wow
