Butting Wooden Stair Bullnose againt laminate floor.

I have laminate flooring at the top. Stairs will be going down. The wooden bullnose is much thicker than the laminate, and if installed will stick up and be an obvious tripping hazard. So, my contractor is insisting on installing a laminate bullnose at the top instead of wooden one. I do not like that.
He thinks that thinning the bullnose will make it prone to cracking.
What is the right way to do it?

Why not the laminate bullnose? Won't it better match the laminate at the top of the stairs, anyway? Or are you trying to match the other stairs?

The right way to do it is Achieve proper run and rise first and foremost. Your stair and flooring installer should have the answer in relation to your local code compliance. The first thing an insurance inspector will look at if you do have a trip/fall/injury is the rise and nosing (at the top step/landing in your case). Changing flooring almost always changes the rise of the adjoining step, if im replacing say a 3/4 hardwood with a lower elevation laminate i will usually pad the entire floor UP to meet original rise at stairway...... -best

Your installers should be able to shave down the thickness of the stair nosing to the thickness of the laminate. Yes, more prone to crack if installed incorrectly. Install properly and you shouldn't have any problems.
