Question about built-in closet & matching the wood trim in the room

We are planning to create a built in closet in the notched area in the corner of this room. The room used to be an office and we're making it a bedroom. So my issue is that the trim is dark brown, but I would like white or off-white built ins. Will that look too funky? Our painter told us that painting trim can be a long involved process, so we thought we'd just keep the trim brown. P.S. The walls will be painted possibly light grey and the carpet is being replaced (grey). Thoughts?

I want a built in closet made for that area. I will clarify that the painter said it would be involved because the trim is currently stained and it would need to be sanded and painted with several layers and cured multiple times (something like that).

I agree with PPF. As you build out the closet, it will need eventual painting. If you want the trim the same color it isn't, in fact, a "long, drawn out process". What a sales job... It's a matter of a bit of sanding, primer, and then it all gets the same paint.

There's not that much trim there, though. Consider replacing it, in the closet, if you're really determined to have a cohesive look. Take the painter's "up-sell" out of the argument. It's a closet, right? Concentrate on proper doors and the layout inside. The rest is actually pretty easy.

Sanded, yes. Then painted. Maybe two coats.
Bedroom for kid or adult? Male or female? Let the occupant pick the color. Gray is drab. Color walls and white trim.

It will be a boys bedroom (a kid). Later it will be a guest room or office. Walls could be cream I guess.

I would take the stained trim from around the (future) interior of the closet and use it to trim the new walls, matching the rest of the room. Then have new trim put around the inside of the walls, as needed, and painted to match the color of the closet system that you install on the interior. Easy peasy! :)

Also we could leave the brown trim (apparently it's a nice"upgraded" trim) and make the built-in closet doors brown. Thoughts on how that would look? Hope I'm
making sense. My husband is def. going to revisit the trim conversation with the painter..

I guess my main question is: If we create an off-white built in closet system there, would it look weird that the rest of the wood trim in the room is stained brown, rather than white?
