Can someone help me tone down too formal living room with poor layout?

last modified: 4 years ago

We’ve been accumulating things in small house for 25 yrs. since retirement and quarantine, I’m more obsessed with dissatisfaction with this room. Too much furniture, not welcoming. Need edit, maybe reupholstery. Art work important, authentic with history for me but maybe makes things too formal. Open to any thoughts and suggestions. My taste has never been traditional, but here I am. Help me change the vibe please. I am going to try to post pics. Thank you.

Wow! Just saw this progress. Congrats. I am late to the party but i would do the bottom stripe of tile at one height and second stripe at a more narrow stripe. More interesting. Do they have trim tile in that burgundy. That looks great. A pencil tile would work. As i showed in my mock up, l love two Moroccan gold trimmed mirrors over the sinks. The big mirrors that span the entire space are dated but in some rooms needed. But i much prefer two. Better look. The vanity with that new hardware is very pretty. Looking forward to seeing results!

Lola, I think the checkerboard with the small squares could look nice. It would give it a special extra look with the same two colors instead of boring rows. It's a good substitute for the fancy tiles you aren't doing.

Check the depth of your wood trim with the tile thickness to see if it would line up. You may find a pencil trim with a design that matches close.

Tip. Bigger tiles mean fewer grout lines. At sink area where splashes rule, fewer grout lines are a plus.

I like the flat edge on bottom of this mirror with tile being straight too.

Love the idea of adding a top row of tiles with some pizzazz!

I’ve got several mirrors in my house in various rooms and a little tip here… The straight edge mirror across the bottom is way easier to keep clean. Those fancy little curves and things at the bottom of a mirror can be super annoying.

Especially in the bathroom I think you’re going to want the convenience of straight across. It’s less of a problem at the top for some reason.

Yes, pool and lisalane, inte interesting topper not only nice but essential. Otherwise, just boring two tone. Something I last sight of for awhile. Back on track now. Another thing that could work is 2x4” tile set vertically with alternating colors. I have samples coming in coco and rose gold. Wish I didnt have to wait. Ideally, think very cool blue with trracotta colors. I am very fatigued by search. Flo, I have already ordered the tile with second color up bigger than bottom. Like inspo pic. Can play with it. Are you messing with me? ha ha. I am going to get frd to measure out lines representing current plan.

Thanks everyone for mirror discussion. I know I brought it up but cannot think about it now. Much appreciation!❤️❤️❤️❤️ back to search.

Website of interest for trim tile.

If you are considering Moroccan frames…the metal is a thin layer of metal over a very heavy wood frame..and will tarnish..a lot…plus takes very strong hook/s to bear the weight

Ok, picked up tiles and here they are on kitchen table. Definately need something stron on top. Also, still open to other color schemes if I dont end up satisfied. Thoughts?

Cool. One less row on top, then trim detail on top.

You like your indoor pic so much. Why not duplicate with only two rows of burgundy?

  • yesterday

To me, even three rows of burgundy would be top heavy. I may have missed something. Have you found a decorative til similar to your inspiration pic?

  • yesterday

Oh! I have the rows wrong if I am copying pic. What looks best?

^tile^ (Would someone please remind me of how to see past the first two lines?😝)

It’s a little hard to see the scale on this but I’m thinking two rows of burgundy on top.

  • yesterday

How many rows of beige are going to be on the bottom? I’m wondering about proportions here

  • yesterday

However without knowing the actual measurements for the amount of space that the beige is going to take up and then the burgundy it’s hard to judge from these photos.

    lolainlasvegas thanked liasch
  • yesterday

And I was thinking the same thing with proportion. My question is how much of that wall height wise are you wanting to cover in tile?

  • yesterday

I may be thinking, going from bottom to top, to try the burgundy at the bottom where your pretty hardware sits, then beige up the wall, then the trim piece above that?

Yes, i meant one less row of the burgundy to keep base of beige in proportion. Then trim on top of the burgundy. You can test with the countertop sample to see which color tile looks best right next to the countertop.

Thanks guys. We can measure off on bathroom wall. I think I got pretty carried away. Originally, I was just planning on thefive rows but my tiles are more narrow. w As I was calculating, it got out of hand I will draw some lines later. I think I’m happy with colors though. Right? Meanwhile, as I continue to search for top tile, I found a Morrocan Tile place here in las vegas. Think all of their tiles too thick but here are a bunch of borders.

  • yesterday

Your trim could be a smidge thicker I would think but the only thing about that then is how high up you’re wanting to go with tile and trim and then how the mirrors will mount up there, I’m thinking.

I like the colors of the beige and burgundy together. If you like them then you’re on your way 💗

I like the burgundy and beige. But i also love that last one. However, if you use it you have to do bottom tiles similar to background rose color and a dark blue tile for bottom rows. I think i would stick with beige and burgundy. Then a twisted top edge in maybe your dark green. I will shop around. Bbl

Ok. This is better. Sorry it took me awhile to hear what you all were talking about.

Thats nice Flo. Thanks. BTW, current configuration is 18”. Tomorrow, will scope out wall and consider best height and mirror placement. ❤️

Playing with adding green trim tile. You could do just one line of green at top edge but you could also border top and bottom of burgundy with the green. Here’s look at possible two stripes of green (or blue) and remove one row of beige below the top part.

  • yesterday

Twisted green is really nice. But now I’m liking the green next to the beige instead of green next to burgundy. Too Christmasy? Now thinking this out, you could have from top to bottom: green twist, then burgundy, say only two rows, then another green twist, then beige down to sink. That would put a nice 5” to 6” width of top trim with the burgundy and green together vs a decorative tile anywhere then the majority going down beige so not too crazy. Depends on how the beige tiles go with your vanity top. Also if you want your fixtures to show off or blend? And the height of all of this depends on mirror installation. The twists might be too thick unless they are across/above the top of your mirror.

Omg Flo, did we just have the same idea! I’m impressed with myself 😂

    lolainlasvegas thanked Alice
  • yesterday

I’m impressed with both of you❤️ I still have samples coming from Mineral Tile, maybe that pretty blue color included. Meanwhile I took a little rest and partially came to my senses. Back to three beige and two maroon. This is why I need you guys! We can play with trims and what goes on top. Probably won’t be finding fancy tile. Cant help but look though. So, now we are dealing with aproximately 12” backsplash. What was I thinking? You guys already knew I was nuts. Right?

Other questions. New faucets? Currently have ugly black, prefer goldish. Where to shop?

  • yesterday

Yea Lola, there are so many beautiful decorative tiles, like why try to pick, would just drive you nuts! You could use one on the vanity square as a placement for pretty little bottles of something? Change them out from time to time? Just using some of your favorite samples or get a few to play with? Like eye candy just for you 💗

I just looked at the tiles I posted above with the pic of your tiles and I don't think any of them work because they include some light gray that doesn't relate to anything. Of course, that was a small sampling but I'm thinking a darker patterned tile that picks up the burgundy is what is needed. Of course, IDK - just my opinion. I like the feel of this just because it relates well to the burgundy and the beige. So many tiles out there....

Thank you lisalane! Yes, that last one works. Probably too big though? I actually dont mind somethingthat contrasts like blue in inspo pic, just hard to find right one. Thinking I might go with plain contrast trim that Flo and Alice talking about. I have been doing a lot of escape sleeping past 24hrs to escape critical mass of tile (and other) clut clutter around here and in my brain. My i-pad and my eyes need a break. Thank yu. I will be back❤️
