Having been through this process, planning ahead is crucial. Contractors will always paint a rosy picture of what they can do, but it is worth getting references, seeing their work in person, and shopping around. For instance, when we remodeled our bathroom, we found it a steep learning curve, especially when having to supply the finishing materials on schedule.

Above all else - plan out your lighting ahead of time! We focused on general, task, and accent lighting see here, which allowed us to achieve a much more flattering lighting scheme from what the contractors were used to doing (pretty ugly overhead vanity lighting).
