We all need to try to be rational about things that bother us. Spiders are useful and mostly harmless; I'd be ashamed to kill one unless it's venomous. And really, most buildings make creaking noises, new houses because the wood is still drying out, old ones with normal expansion/contraction from changes in the temperature and humidity. Heating vents do the same.

One odd thing I've recently noticed as my hearing begins to fade (I'm 77) is that when I have music turned low at night, it sometimes sounds just like voices murmuring. If I turn my head, move closer to the radio or turn the volume up a little the music sounds normal again. Makes me wonder if the "voices" my mother complained about (she died a few years ago at 95) actually were distorted versions of what was playing on her radio.

There are strange noises outside because of wind and critters... the saddest one I recall was some nocturnal bird, maybe an owl, sitting in the tree outside my bedroom window with some little victim, a mouse, chipmunk maybe -- the poor thing kept struggling and even after the owl took off with it and flew up the street I could hear it crying.

Little bitty spiders don't bother me, but those big hairy wolf spiders do. I could live the rest of my life without seeing another one of those. Even my husband who studied spiders for his master's doesn't like the big ones. We are not about to have a pet tarantula!

When I was on a vacation with my friends, we stayed in a hostel. I was taking a shower when my friend asked me a question. When I'm thinking, I look up (I don't know why), and I looked up and saw at least a dozen spiders. I have arachnophobia, and I freaked out...!
