The mattresses are resting on a platform built like a floor with joists placed every two feet. The ledge that wraps around the bed has hinged doors on the fronts of the ledges (behind the pillows). The doors are there so that we could access the power on the walls and for extra storage. The ledge is about 8" deep but you could make it as wide as you want to fit your space. I hope that's enough information. Thank you for your interest.

This reminds me of the cubbies we used to make in my grandmother's odd-shaped upstairs. Brings tears to my eyes. So beautiful. Do you think the bedroom's owner has slumber parties? I would love to return to my childhood self. You, Amy Hopkins, are a magical woman.

Thank you gturner805! And yes, it is used for slumber parties. That's actually what is was designed for. The homeowners have two teenage daughters.

I bought them everywhere. Pier 1, Marshall's, TJ Maxx, Ross, Target... Just anytime I can across a cool looking pillow I bought it.

You can find similar style pillow covers, handwoven on the back strap loom, as traditionally made by Mexican artisans on http://www.chiapasbazaar.com/collections/pillow-covers. They are colorful, as Mexican traditional style. Thanks

This room was originally designed with an old fashioned feel. Lots of wrought iron beds and quilts. The homeowners daughters thought it was old and scary. So since changing the rustic metal and barn wood was not an option I had to find a way to make it more fun for teenagers. My inspiration was the movie The Little princess. She was stuck in the attic but the Indian butler created this beautiful bohemian room for her. That's the look I wanted but with really fun bright colors.

If you're referring to the metal roof above the bed I doubt they do anything more than dust it occasionally.

The width of the space is around 9' the highest point is around 9-10'. There is a ledge that runs the perimeter of the space and it is 8" wide. Then two full mattresses fit snuggly between. There is a 10" platform that the mattresses rest on.

The roof is metal and the wall behind is wood planks. Both materials were harvested from an old barn on the homeowner's family land. The walls have a smooth texture. They were then painted and glazed.
