Concord Green HomeBeach Style Home Office, Boston

2011 EcoHome Design Award Winner

Key to the successful design were the homeowner priorities of family health, energy performance, and optimizing the walk-to-town construction site. To maintain health and air quality, the home features a fresh air ventilation system with energy recovery, a whole house HEPA filtration system, radiant & radiator heating distribution, and low/no VOC materials. The home’s energy performance focuses on passive heating/cooling techniques, natural daylighting, an improved building envelope, and efficient mechanical systems, collectively achieving overall energy performance of 50% better than code. To address the site opportunities, the home utilizes a footprint that maximizes southern exposure in the rear while still capturing the park view in the front.

Knowing the floor was to remain subfloor in the near-term, the builder was more careful about the seams, however the combination of strong daylight and white paint make the largest difference.

Yes, that is the approximate width of the dormer inside.

The peak is approximately 10' so the shed dormer was needed to improve the head height and usability of the space.

ECOS non-toxic floor paint matched to Benjamin Moore Mayonnaise. Walls and trim match as well.

    Hello "thelouvre".

The desk is made from reclaimed wood. Gorgeous in person. It came from Winston Flowers in Concord. Love their shop.

    Thank you for stopping by.

An added plus is to have a window at the top of the stairs to bring light down into the home and illuminate the way up.

Take over the attic. If you have extra space in your attic and need a home studio, consider renovating it. Dormer windows and/or skylights can be added to let in the natural light. Finally, using every inch of space up to the rafters keeps the square footage maximized and the footprint minimized. The metal roof helps to keep this area cooler in the summer, reflecting the warmth from the sun. This room is another flexible space that can be used as a studio, home office, exercise room, playroom or extra bedroom. All of the mechanical necessities are tucked underneath the other gable, leaving this space open and usable. "If you ask me whether it is better to finish a basement or an attic, I will vote attic every time," Kauffman Tharp says. "Dark and dank vs. sunny and breezy. Which would you choose?"
