His and Hers Master BedroomTraditional Bedroom, Vancouver

The small master bedroom in this 1950's era home lacked character as well as space so we added some molding detail to the focal wall behind the bed and kept furniture to a minimum, replacing the closet and dressers with built-in cabinetry along one wall. The black painted furniture provides a strong masculine foundation that is softened with a pretty chandelier, delicate hardware and deep coral velvet cushions that can be changed out with the seasons. Interior Design by Lori Steeves of Simply Home Decorating. Photos by Tracey Ayton Photography.

I'm afraid that I am unable to make a reliable colour suggestion for your room without being in the space. You really should consult a local professional for best results.

We recently purchased the Antoinette chandelier from Wayfair for our master and it looks just like this light. Looks like they just added white shades. You can find it here and it's a great price:

The mouldings were positioned based on the size of the headboard and nightstands. We wanted the framed areas to be slightly larger than the pieces of furniture so they sat within them. The mouldings are approximately 5"-6" down from the crown mouldings.

This solid oak floor was original to the 1950's home. It is in fact red oak that we refinished in a chestnut stain. the planks are 2 1/2" wide which was common at the time. In the bedrooms of this home, in order to save money, they used shorter planks and offcuts resulting in more variation in colour.

Paint colours are a very tricky business, especially when you are looking at them in a photograph. The best way that I can describe this gray colour is that it has a very subtle violet/blue undertone. I recommend hiring a local colour consultant to select the right colour for your own space.

  • kcsublett
Looks like Benjamin Moore Gray Owl. I have it in my home and it's a light gray with blue undertones. Some say it has green undertones but I see more blue. Give it a try - beautiful color!

This floor was original to this house and it is either white or red oak. The stain is a custom stain that we could best describe as "Chestnut." Hope that helps!

Hi Duane. This room has standard 8 foot ceilings. My rule of thumb is that if the chandelier is hanging fully over the bed then you can hang something up to about 24" tall from the ceiling, as long as you don't stand up in bed you should be fine!

This hardwood floor is solid oak 2" planks that was original to the 1950's house. Luckily it had been covered in layers of carpet for over 50 years. We stripped it and stained it in a light chestnut colour and the results were fantastic.

Hi Riley. This is a photo of my own bedroom. The duvet cover and shams are part of the Barbara Barry collection and were purchased at Elte Carpet and Home in Toronto. They a white pique fabric which is great if you don't like to sit on your bed and if you don't have cats since the fabric does tend to catc on something sharp. Nonetheless I love the set. The top of the duvet and shams have a scalloped detail that is trimmed in a very pale gray. I know how difficult it is to find nice white bedding. I looked for a set for over 2 years before I found this one!

Since this master bedroom is very small we did not use any actual dressers (chiffoniers) for clothing storage. Instead we opted for larger three drawer nightstands for storage of smaller items and all other clothing is stored in the wall to wall built-in wardrobes on an adjacent wall not seen in this photo.

Hello ideasforh1. There is one window in this room - it goes into a corner and is a little awkward. We treated it with white 3 1/2" plantation shutters and layered them with custom black out drapery with grommets hung on a black rod. The drapery fabric is a white matelasse. The idea is that the room be completely neutral so that the accent colour (in this case a bright pink) can be changed to suit the client's mood.
