..since there is also access to this dead corner space from the back side - in the dining room, I think I would've simply created a standard access door and/or drawer from THAT side. When that sort of access is not available then I may opt for this approach. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate this "out-of-the-box" approach, but only after all other (read simpler) approaches have been exhausted.
