This custom lake home was designed for a challenging building lot on the lake, with fantastic views of the water, the sunrise and the sunsets, as well. The client desired lake views from all rooms possible, lots of natural light, while also incorporating a 3-car Garage and a ‘Surf Shop’ for all of their lake toys. Given that the lot is surrounded by water on 3 sides, it had 50’ deep lake side setbacks surrounding it and the septic field took up half the remaining site, as well, so there was a small, odd shaped building envelop left to design the house within. We were certainly up for the challenge, as many clients hire us because of our ability to creatively design on challenging building sites, and this client is a repeat client for us, as well, after having seen what we were able to create for them with their last home renovation.
The goal within the restrictions of all the lot setbacks was to achieve a reasonable size family home with an open layout for the main living spaces maximizing lake views, with 4 Bedrooms, 3.5 Bathrooms, a small Home Office, a Bonus Room, and lots of indoor-outdoor connectivity from the main living spaces to the ample outdoor Covered Porches for entertaining, and these Porches provide shading from the late afternoon sun. The wife loves the bi-folding window at the Kitchen sink so she can still have a conversation with her husband as he is grilling just outside the Kitchen on the Porch. The Master Bedroom and Bathroom both have great lake views, as well as a large slider to access the Covered Porch, and there is a Storage Closet on the Porch just outside the Bedroom for storing porch furniture cushions when storms roll through.
The biggest challenge was orienting the Great Room to have both a sunrise and a sunset view and this was accomplished by angling the main living space to be oriented with one large wall of glass facing NE and another large wall of glass facing NW, along with the Kitchen and Dining Room, as well. The lake views are spectacular from these rooms year round, no matter where the sun rises and sets on the lake, and the Master Bedroom and Bathroom both have a great sunset view. They also desired a Front Porch (street side) that would be protected by the wind, and have Southern sun on it, so they could sit outside in the winter and enjoy the sun, without the cold winter winds blowing through, so we created a recessed Porch on this side ample enough for two chairs,
The 3-car Garage became a tandem Garage and Workshop with a lake view, and the ‘Surf Shop’ has easy access to the dock side at the lake. The Laundry Room is the only room in the home that doesn’t have a lake view, yet it has natural light from the south.

Renovated to accommodate a family of eight, this oceanfront home proudly overlooks the gateway to Marblehead Neck. This renovation preserves and highlights the character and charm of the existing circa 1900 gambrel while providing comfortable living for this large family. The finished product is a unique combination of fresh traditional, as exemplified by the contrast of the pool house interior and exterior.

A screen porch was added to the side of the interior sitting room, enabling the two spaces to become one. A unique three-panel bi-fold door, separates the indoor-outdoor space; on nice days, plenty of natural ventilation flows through the house. Opening the sunroom, living room and kitchen spaces enables a free dialog between rooms. The kitchen level sits above the sunroom and living room giving it a perch as the heart of the home. Dressed in maple and white, the cabinet color palette is in sync with the subtle value and warmth of nature. The cooktop wall was designed as a piece of furniture; the maple cabinets frame the inserted white cabinet wall. The subtle mosaic backsplash with a hint of green, represents a delicate leaf.

The Hill Kitchen is a one of a kind space. This was one of my first jobs I worked on in Nashville, TN. The Client just fired her cabinet guy and gave me a call out of the blue to ask if I can design and build her kitchen. Well, I like to think it was a match made in heaven. The Hill's Property was out in the country and she wanted a country kitchen with a twist. All the upper cabinets were pretty much built on-site. The 150 year old barn wood was stubborn with a mind of it's own. All the red, black glaze, lower cabinets were built at our shop. All the joints for the upper cabinets were joint together using box and finger joints. To top it all off we left as much patine as we could on the upper cabinets and topped it off with layers of wax on top of wax. The island was also a unique piece in itself with a traditional white with brown glaze the island is just another added feature. What makes this kitchen is all the details such as the collection of dishes, baskets and stuff. It's almost as if we built the kitchen around the collection. Photo by Kurt McKeithan

The expanded kitchen area is now a sunlit space for a young couple that loves to entertain and cook. The selection of range needed a hood that was more than 400 CFM. This required supplying make-up air which was accomplished by artfully creating inconspicuous vents under the cook hood.

The existing deck on the back of this house baked in the afternoon sun. The homeowners were looking to convert it into a screened porch they could enjoy. They also wanted the new porch to blend-in well and look like it had always been part of the house. We were able to accomplish that and create the “country” feel they wanted by using new board and batten siding on the interior along with a vaulted ceiling with exposed beams.
Project Included:
Examine existing foundation to confirm that it would support new structure
Build new screened porch using “Screeneze” system for screening installation
Install new siding and roofing to match the house as closely as possible
New Azek decking in Brownstone
New interior board and batten siding (Certainteed in Desert Tan)
New maintenance-free Azek post wraps and Boral trim
New Larson screen door

At the heart of this Remodeling project was a 1980's home that had never been updated.
The homeowners wanted a modern, contemporary, yet warm feel for a new Master Bath. The Bathroom and the Closet were gutted. A more spacious design and dramatic view was achieved by relocating the fixtures and cabinets as well as moving the closet wall. The visual warmth was achieved through the use of faux and natural slate with both dark and soft blue colors with some sparkle in the backsplash. The soft, low sheen, off-white finish accents the clean straight, contemporary, lines of the on the custom vanities and storage cabinets. Subtle, thermal, warmth is achieved through the under floor radiant heating.
Upon completion of the bathroom, we were asked to design a modern yet slightly rustic Kitchen, Entry and Living Area. This was achieved through high definition, faux wood, porcelain, flooring installed throughout these areas. Other features to accomplish this look and feel in the Entry were the rustic alder, custom cabinetry, as well as the custom wrought iron stair railing and distressed, knotty alder stairs and faux beams. We also gave the fireplace a new, modern, warmth with a natural split-face stone veneer. New lighting and hardware accents completed the cabinets and highlighted the awesome leather finished granite tops.
