We have had great success planting bamboo. Preparation, as with anything, is the key. Generally, bamboo will only root in the top 18-24 inches of soil. Therefore, you need a bamboo barrier that surpasses this. We use a plastic barrier that is smooth and runs 36 inches tall. This we plant with several inches higher than the surrounding soil but is hidden by a mulch layer. If possible, you want to also angle the top of the barrier outward so the roots that do hit it will be encouraged to shoot upward.

Maintenance will always be a factor with bamboo, however. Vigilance against shoots "hopping over", making sure to not crush the barrier edge, etc will be the best defense against bamboo running rampant.

Another very good option, like with mint, is to plant bamboo in containers which ensure it's easy containment. Clumping bamboos would be best in this case.

I didn't see any comments about planting bamboo in pots. I have mostly cement in my yard with a pool and surrounding cement decking. Very little planting space but need to add privacy and greenery. From what I've read, it seems "clumping" is the best option for pots. Can someone recommend which one is the best to plant around a pool? thanks.

This is a beautiful space and we would like to do something similar. We are currently in the process of building our home and to put a prefab hot tub on the roof deck we would have to crane it up before completion. However, we aren't sure what we want yet and would prefer to do what you have pictures. Is this something that can be done after the house is completed or are their large components that would still need to be craned to the roof? Thank you in advance for your help. Also, any contacts who do this work in Chicago?

most custom hot tub covers are after-market purchases by the homeowner. you will want to know about weight, durability, how the panels collapse for moving away from the tub, etc.

I'm sure you could download a dimensioned plan from Bradford Spas and give it to a carpenter in your area. You may have local codes to consider like: rise and run for steps, when you will need a handrail, footing depth for frost areas, etc

Many stone suppliers carry Connecticut Blue stone. Call your local Landscape Supply outfit. In the SF Bay Area, we get our material from Bay Area Bluestone in San Rafael and others.

That is black bamboo. It makes for a very stylish and vertical screen but it does need to be installed correctly to avoid its escape into your (or your neighbors') yard.

Please see the Bradford Spa website. I am sure you can find all the specifications you could need. They also make custom spas so, ultimately, the dimensions are up to you. Additionally, Google has an excellent unit conversion tool if nothing is listed in metric sizes.
